2 CD set. Enjoying the luxury of three albums (where many label mates did not get any) resulted in Chuck Jackson Arrives, Going Back To Chuck Jackson and the VIP released Teardrops Keep Falling On My Heart in 1970. Only the first two of these were released here in the UK and all three have gone on to become collectors items with fans all over the world fetching high prices on internet auction sites and in specialist used vinyl shops. Now for the very first time, anywhere in the world these three albums come together on one double CD set celebrating the time the soul star spent with the Gordy empire, in addition there are non album 45's and a selection of never before heard sides including his take on the Kim Weston classic, 'Helpless'. Universal. 2005.

I cannot believe that nobody critiqued this super collection by one of the true giants of R&B, Chuck Jackson. Here you have virtually all of the recordings Chuck did for Motown, most in stereo and 24 bit remastered. Most of these recordings have been out of print since the 70's and there are a few unreleased performances too. Most of the songs are solid soul and the band is really kicking on all of the tracks. This is another European release but you can get it from Amazon. Don't miss this one. I fear that we may be seeing the last pressings of the old 60's and 70's Motown soul artists due to lack of interest and meager cd sales of these artists. These recordings have been out of print for 30 some years and when these are no longer in print, it may be 60 or 70 years before they appear again if ever.

Like the first person who reviewed this set, I quite agree this masterpiece will not be around much longer. It's no longer even listed among Jackson's albums. Yet, here are the three albums he recorded for Motown plus singles and unreleased recordings. The bluesy "Baby, I'll Get It" as well as the Gospel-esque "Is There Anything Love Can't Do" show Jackson's early roots. Here he shows a lot of influence from James Cleveland and Alex Bradford. He beautifully covered Smokey's "You Can't Let The Boy Overpower The Man In You" and Aretha's "Cry Like A Baby". "Honey Come Back" is both spoken and sung with such conviction that it's hard to believe you're just listening to a recording. Of course, the early hits such as "Tell Him I'm Not Home", "I Don't Want To Cry" and "Any Day Now" will have to be purchased elsewhere, but these Motown sides are generally better than the Wand/Scepter years.
