Motown's first queen,
By
This review is from: Motown Early Classics (Audio CD)
You don't hear so much about Mary Wells these days, but before Diana Ross came along she was pretty much the queen of Motown. The hits dried up when she left the label in 1964 and she died in 1992 at the age of 49. This budget series Early Classics is a winner because with Motown, the earlier the better. All the hits are here, including My Guy, of course, and You Beat Me To The Punch, even a couple of duets with Marvin Gaye. The single Motown would have released if she hadn't quit the label is included (Whisper You Love Me Boy, later recorded by the Supremes) as are a couple of items that lay in the vaults for decades before having their day. Two personal favourites are missing: When I'm Gone and What's Easy For Two Is So Hard For One, so I hope she gets The Motown Anthology treatment before too long

Great Collection,

This collection features most of Mary's biggest hits with Motown plus some interesting B sides and album cuts I've never heard before. "Whisper You Love Me", always thought of as a Supremes cut, gets a royal treatment here and would have been her hit had it been released as a single. Drop In the Bucket also shines. Overall, Mary at her BEST!

A WELL ROUNDED OUT CHOICE OF HER MOTOWN DAYS,
By A Customer
This review is from: Motown Early Classics (Audio CD)
THIS CD CONTAINS SEVERAL ALBUM CUTS THAT COULD HAVE MADE IT AS A SINGLE HAD SHE NOT LEFT THE LABEL.TWO OF THE MOST INTERESTING CUTS ON THIS CD THE UNRELEASED "WHEN YOUR LOVER COMES BACK" AND "DROP IN THE BUCKET" WERE NEVER RELEASED UNTIL 1993 AND 1979 RESPECTIVLEY.THE DUETS WITH MAVIN GAYE ARE A TRUE DELIGHT. THEY JUST SOUND GREAT TOGETHER. MOTOWN STILL HAS MANY UNRELEASED TRACKS BY HER AND MORE WITH MARVIN AND SOMEONE AT MOTOWN SHOULD RELEASE THEM SO THEY CAN SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY AND MARY'S MANY FANS CAN ENJOY THEM.SHE WAS A GREAT TALENT AND IT IS JUST A SHAME THAT HER LIFE ENDED SO YOUNG. THANK YOU.
