A Great Idea a Long Time in the Making,
By Dee Sharp "Cruzanson" (Long Beach, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Motown For Kids (Audio CD)
When my eldest was a toddler, we took him to one of those toddler gyms every weekend. They played music during the freeplay time, and one of the CDs they had was a collection of saccharine Motown covers. I often wondered to why Motown themselves never did this. Well, now they have.
These are all the originals - Stevie, Smokey, the Jackson 5 - and it's a fun listen from top to bottom. A friend came over the house and saw the collection. Having grown up near Detroit, she said, "This reminds me of every road trip I ever took with my parents." But most important, my kids love this disc. It's fun hearing them sing "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" and "Do You Love Me" at the tops of their lungs. A function at the junction, indeed. Highly recommended.

My kids love this CD! The concept is so smart - Songs for kids that parents love, too! Plus there are adorable kids tatoos inside! I also have 2 others from the same company that are awesome: "Totally 80s For Kids" and "Songs for the Car". It's such a relief to listen to music in the car again that I like, but my kids love, too! Totally recommend!

Great idea, unlistenable disc.,

This is a fantastic collection of Motown tunes, and contains many of my daughter's favourites. However, it's let down by one of the poorest mastering jobs I've heard in recent years. Each subsequent Motown re-issue has seen fit to push the volume a little further, and now it's at the point where the songs are a mess. Gavin Lurssen, world renowned sound engineer, I'm talking to you. My stereo still has a volume control, and I am perfectly capable of turning it up myself. For anyone interested in these songs, I recommend seeking out any Motown re-issue from pre-2002, specifically the 3cd compilation "Tamla Motown Gold - The Sound of Young America" (which contains at least half of them).
To Universal Music, Gavin Lurssen, and his ilk - this madness must cease. Mastering is an art, not a volume war. The legacy of Motown is being destroyed by substandard engineering, and it's shocking to behold.
