Book Description

December 1980
MOTT THE HOOPLE is an underground classic 60's comic novel. It is written in a freewheeling bawdy style. It's hero, Norman Mott, is a Rabelaisian figure who refuses to wear anybody's label, insists on being his own man, and, through a series of comic misadventures, discovers just who that man is. Some people will know Mott the Hoople from the British rock band that took its name from the book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Mott the Hoople should be approached like a trip to an amusement park: one goes to have fun, and the rides and the freaks, the cotton candy and the hot dogs, are all there now for one's ready pleasure. The book moves at the Marx Brothers' pace and is one of the funniest I have read in years." -- Josh Greenfield, Life Magazine

"A garganua. A clown, but not without nobility. Here is Willard Manus' achievement." -- Chicago Tribune

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific uplifting read, May 20, 2007
This review is from: Mott the Hoople (Paperback)
While this has little to do with the band. It is a funny book about a card shark who falls in love with a fat rich girl and their road story.

3.0 out of 5 stars The band was named after the book ..., June 15, 2007
This review is from: Mott the Hoople (Paperback)
... not the other way around. Fans of Hunter, Watts & Co. should see this as perhaps an insight into the band's early influences. It is *not* a biography of the band (which didn't even exist yet).

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT A DUDE, July 15, 2005
This review is from: Mott the Hoople (Hardcover)
I recently purchased this book and was sadly surprised to find out it had NOTHING to do with the band, other than that this was the book that guy stevens got the name for the band from. Worse, on the cover of the book behind the title is a sketchy print of Ian Hunter holding a guitar. This little bit of misleading info caused me to open the package thereby making me unable to return the book for a refund. Other than a curiosity piece for completists of all things Mott, please do not get burned like i did by buying this book.
As far as the actual story, it's your typical narrative-on-the-road type. Again, not bad, but not Mott the Hoople.
Instead, get Ian Hunter's "diary of a r+r star".
