I have to say that this little acorn caught my eye online and I had to know more. First off if you are looking for earth shattering sound be realistic. Its an acorn for goodness sake. So with that being said let me tell you what you will actually get. Amazing sound that I would equate to the best smartphone speaker with twice the richness and a lot more volume. Its 10 times better than the speaker in my netbook and twice as good as the speaker in my HTC Hero. I found that if you get inventive with where you place the speaker you can make the sound project even more. I turned it speaker side down in an empty martini glass and the sound projected to twice the room filling level. So you really can get even more from it depending on how you use it. Everyone I have shown it too has been very impressed with it. And want to know where to get one themselves.

The FM reception is good even in San Francisco where radio can be dicey depending on where you are. It uses the headphone cord or line in cord that you plug into it for the antenna. It comes with a very short line in cord that is easy to take with and works very well.

If I had only one real complaint about it is the actual getting use to turning it on and getting it to radio took a quick read on the very limited instruction card. That also took me a minute to figure out because the packaging also included the instructions for another model that they sell. Make sure you are reading the smaller instruction card. The larger one will only confuse things. The acorn work completely differently than the other model. However it does works exactly how it is described to work on the small instruction card. But it is a little odd until you get use to it. For instance you must plug in a line in order to turn it on.

This adorable little speaker cranks out a surprising amount of sound. The bass end isn't particularly thumping, as you might imagine, but the high-end comes out loud and clear without sounding tinny. The FM transmitter is a nice perk that I use more regularly than I expected - you can also run the FM over the speaker, or you can listen via headphones by plugging them in directly to the acorn. I just rode my bike around town cranking Led Zeppelin with this cute little acorn dangling from my handlebars... If that ain't rock and roll, I don't know what is.

The operation of the acorn can be a bit confusing, so don't throw away the instructions. There's just one button, but you have to have something plugged in for the speaker to work, even if you are using the FM transmitter and playing out the speaker. So, that's the one weird thing - you have to remember to keep the micro-to-micro cable with it so it will turn on if you aren't plugging in your mp3 player or headphones.

I just wanted to also comment on the company that sells these through Amazon: Pyramid Distribution. Unfortunately, I didn't write a review for the company in the 90-day time frame. However, I wanted to give them their due props because I just wrote them an e-mail asking for another copy of the instructions for the acorn. The owner, Dan, wrote me back within 1 minute at noon on a Sunday. So, that's pretty great.

Seriously, you may think this thing looks like some gimmick cute toy. Let me tell u something... this is definitely a conversational piece. I guarantee you will turn heads with this thing. It is amazing powerfully loud and clear and extremely portable. The price that you pay may seem a bit high but I promise you... you will LOVE it. You may even want to get one for you love ones or your friends. I would recommend getting it if you can afford it. If you are worried if it really works or not... believe me, it does that and more. I even have the other version of it... the classic radio shape. Enjoy!!!!

I really enjoyed this speaker while I had it. However, I disagree that it is notably louder than a smartphone speaker. Clearer, sure, but there were times when it was simply not loud enough even attached to the keychain on my hip. I had best results using a kind of "frowny-face" EQ curve with my mp3 player to give it a bit more headroom.

The speaker is pleasantly unhyped in the upper registers. It doesn't have much low end, but it doesn't sound tinny. Full and flat, just without much action below 300 Hz.

A word of warning: the keyring on top is a small screw that can work itself out. I lost mine this weekend while walking my dog and didn't realize it until I got home. And unfortunately, the price makes it hard to justify replacing. I suppose this could have been prevented easily enough with a dab of super glue.

VERY cute, and cool features--I simply cannot find another portable speaker as small. But the price, the volume, and the fatal design flaw above are the reasons I gave it 3 stars.

The "acorn" is perhaps slightly larger than a "real" acorn, but the sound is quite impressive, nonetheless. Obviously, there is no booming base in something barely over 1x1 inch, but if your idea is to use it in lieu of the horrid little speaker on your phone or laptop, this thing is great. True, even a cheap set of ear buds would sound better, but then you'll be the only one who is able to listen to those YouTube or talking Tom Cat videos, etc., you share with friends all the time. It's a better gift for women, because there is no problem with carrying around the tiny (approx 3 inch) cord in a purse. Men probably won't go for that. Otherwise, the acorn itself fits easily on a keychain. I got it for my 14 year old daughter, but after hearing it, my wife promptly ordered one for herself. Unless the thing breaks after a few uses, it's easily 5 stars.
