5.0 out of 5 stars A great, inexpensive wildlife camera
I got the Moultrie Gamespy as a birthday gift from my husband and I could not be more pleased with it. In fact, I'm looking to buy another one. The camera is well-built/sturdy and has survived a couple of near-hurricane storms. Right now it's still operating on the first set of batteries and it's run for just about a month.

Forget what you've read in other reviews. This unit you should pass by. First off it's NOT an IR unit. The strobe flash is excessively bright. If you place it near a game path woods your going to 1) scare game off their trails, and 2) it will illuminate it's location for thieves. The flash is either on or off. Can't set to AUTO for daylight conditions. Best to be...

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, inexpensive wildlife camera, September 17, 2011
This review is from: Moultrie D55 Game Spy 5 Megapixel Digital Game Camera (Camo) (Sports)

Setup was simple, although I did have to fumble around to insert the SD card. Keep the setup instructions, though, so you know how to reset the date/time, etc, if you need to.

I've only had it in place (near our pond) for about a month, but I've gotten great pictures of: 2 deer; 6+ raccoons; a possum; and the best -- a bobcat with a cotton rat in it's mouth. I love the fact that I can see the spots on the fawn and the markings/spots on the bobcat. That clarity is why I wanted the standard flash instead of an IR. Of course, I also have the obligatory pictures of our dogs and me or my husband messing with the camera. :) We have a terrific picture of my husand's knees. LOL

You can select whether you want the date/time stamp on your pictures, or not. (We have it stamped on the picture so we can see when the animals are around. The bobcat surprised us as it showed up about 6:00AM instead of the middle of the night.)

We selected the standard flash (not IR) model because you get better clarity and of course color with the pictures. The downside of the flash is that it does surprise/scare the animals, so there's no point in setting it to take two pictures in close succession. The second one is always empty of wildlife. However, the flash doesn't seem to bother the raccoons too much because they (or it may be the same one, over and over again) keep coming back.

I wish we could post pictures so you could see them. I have not tried the video and since most of the animals visit at night, I suspect the video would not be worth running as you'd basically just see the animal running away.

Anyway, if you're looking for a very inexpensive wildlife cam, this model has worked very well for us. I recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic use trail cam, January 31, 2012
This review is from: Moultrie D55 Game Spy 5 Megapixel Digital Game Camera (Camo) (Sports)
My husband and I purchased this to see what goes on out back in the woods at night. We were not interested in purchasing a high-resolution camera and this fit within our budget (actually, this was about $11 less than a major sporting goods chain where we purchased ours). It was easy to set up and install. I like the fact that no software is needed to download the pics... it installs as a basic USB device in Windows XP and Windows 7.

As someone else mentioned, the flash produces a much better image, but at a cost-- it looks like lightning in the woods because of the flash going off. The deer and other critters, however, don't seem to mind.

If you are looking for a budget-friendly, basic trail camera that you can check frequently, I would recommend this. We're happy with the quality of the pictures and easy of use. I cannot comment on the video because I haven't taken any... but we really weren't interested in video, anyway. This also doubles as basic security camera, too. Even from the woods, we have a clear image of the house during the day.

Can't set to AUTO for daylight conditions. Best to be use with flash off. But be certain to have large SD card because your going to get a lot of dark images. It just keeps taking picture whether or not it has sufficient light. Optics are horrid. Pictures are fuzzy and indistinct at best. Video mode is even worse. Grainy and choppy even on high-def which is only 640X480 for a 5 meg camera! This unit is essentially a cheap $9.00 digital camera with a motion sensor. If you absolutely must have it, then search the web for the lowest possible price and the best return policy. That way you won't have as many regrets.

The two Moultrie Gamespy Deluxe 5 game cameras that I have seem to work well. I have gotten lots of nice pictures of deer and wild hogs, and an occasional gobbler too. I especially enjoy knowing when the pictures were taken (which is mostly at night).

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Happy with Performance, December 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Moultrie D55 Game Spy 5 Megapixel Digital Game Camera (Camo) (Sports)
I purchased this camera a couple months ago after looking around for a reasonably priced name brand camera. I have to say set-up and programming was very easy for this camera but overall performance left a lot to be desired. I set this up over a feeder so I expected to get a lot of pictures, man was I ever disappointed! I could clearly see that there had been a lot of activity at the feeder but very few pictures if any at times. I tried different camera settings but nothing helped. my feeder had been knocked down by bears but the Moultrie camera had no pictures of it. I was very disappointed when I would go to the feeder and find deer tracks all over the place and bear tracks and droppings but no pictures. It seems that the only time it would always take a picture was when I was walking up to the camera. I later put up my dad's camera from a different manufacturer and was thrilled when I would have a couple hundred photos. I would not recommend anyone to buy this camera. I do have other Moultrie products that I am very happy with but this is not one of them!

This camera was broken when I got it. I must say that I have owned many game cams and Moultrie has been a few. They do not need to be in the camera side of products. Even after I sent it off and got the replacement it did not work that well. And the delays are not good. It will power on only when you tell it too. Then when it goes to sleep the trip will not wake it up no matter what you do till you turn it on for yourself again. Do not buy find another brand. I really wish Sony or Canon would come out with a game cam worth buying.

1.0 out of 5 stars Never worked properly, June 8, 2011

I purchased this game camera as a gift for my Dad. It never worked properly. I tried different batteries, different SD cards, different locations. The only pictures it ever took were of me cussing at it. I tried calling Moultrie 4 different times. Never got a tech on the line. Was on hold for at least a combined 3 hours. I gave up.. So buy anything else.. they cannot work any worse. I only rated it a one because it wont let me give it a zero.
