The M-990i is part of the flagship Advanced Line of Moultrie game cameras, ideal for capturing some of the highest quality digital images of deer and other wild game on your land or hunting camp. Built to withstand the harshest outdoor conditions, and designed to escape the attention of even the sharpest bucks, the M-990i is your silent sentry, capturing all the sights and sounds of your next big trophy. For a clearer, more comprehensive picture of what’s waiting for you out there, trust the M-990i to deliver the invaluable field intelligence you need to stay ahead of the game.

Decked out in Mossy Oak® Treestand camouflage and powered by Moultrie’s advanced 70-foot NO-GLOW infrared flash technology, the M-990i is practically invisible to game. Day or night, the motion sensors detect and stealthily capture prey within 50 feet – all without alerting your subjects to the camera’s presence.

Advanced Camera Line

Even though it’s completely silent, the M-990i’s got all the bells and whistles. Capture some of the highest quality photos available, then preview your photos and HD videos right there in the field on the 2-inch full-color LCD screen. Ample photo, video and timelapse settings let you customize your surveillance, while a detailed Information Strip relays to you all the ideal conditions for encountering the biggest game again.

The M-990i employs a passive infrared (PIR) motion sensor that’s triggered by heat and movement within 50 feet.

Delay is a low-power "sleep" state entered after image capture. Longer delays extend battery life and limit the images recorded in high-traffic situations (e.g. – on a very busy game feeder). The camera can be set for 5, 10, or 30 second delays as well as 1, 5, 10, or 30 minute delays.

When using the Delay function, multi-shot mode allows the camera to record multiple photos between set delay increments. “Triggered" multi-shot (3 photos) requires a motion trigger for each photo. "Burst" multi-shot takes 3 photos quickly after a single motion trigger.

Timelapse mode disables the PIR sensor and instead triggers the camera through a countdown timer that can be set for up to 2 different time lapse captures per day.

In this setting, you can set an adjustable interval between each image capture. Use longer intervals for slower changing subjects and shorter intervals for faster changing subjects. The M-990i allows for 13 different interval settings, lasting from as little as 10 seconds to as long as 24 hours.

The camera can be triggered by both its passive infrared (PIR) motion sensor and a time-lapse program.

The M-990i resets rapidly after image capture, taking only 1 second after a motion trigger until the camera is fully ready to detect motion and capture more.

The camera display is a full-color 2-inch LCD screen that lets you navigate menus, aim your camera with a live preview, and review your captured images. The other buttons on the front of the display panel are backlit for ease of viewing during low-light conditions.

The flash is equipped with 32 Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. This 940nm NO-GLOW LED technology is essentially invisible and can illuminate game up to 60 feet away in total darkness.

For night-time operation of the camera, you can select between reduced motion blur or extended flash range to maximize image clarity and visibility.

Allows for multiple settings of photo resolution, to better help you manage storage and image quality. All photos are captured in 16:9 aspect ratio (the same as modern high-def televisions) and optional resolutions include:

  • Low 0.9 MP (1280x720)
  • Medium 2.0 MP (1920x1080)
  • High 4.0 MP (2688x1512)
  • Enhanced 10.0 MP (4224x2376)

Captures video in 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio and comes equipped with two different resolution options:

  • Low VGA VGA (640x480) [4:3]
  • High (1280x720) [16:9]

The M-990i records sound with a built-in microphone when capturing video.

Features a 50-degree horizontal viewing area recorded by the camera.

Every image captured can be imprinted with an Infostrip along the bottom that includes date, time, temperature (in F or C), moon phase, barometric pressure, and an 11-character name of the camera/location.

Covered in Mossy Oak® Treestand Camouflage

The case features an olive drab interior with a solid weatherproof plastic exterior. Comes with standard 1/4”-20 tripod mount on bottom and back, plus strap slots on back for use with included nylon mounting strap. Side of case also features a python lock compatible hasp for additional security.

  • Camera
  • 1” x 4’ olive drab mounting strap
  • User guide in English, French and German
  • Moultrie brand window decal

Camera requires 8 AA Alkaline or Lithium batteries that should last up to the capture of 13,000 images. This is a conservative estimate of photos that can be taken before the camera’s batteries are depleted. Actual results vary based on user settings and environmental factors.

Compatible with Moultrie’s 12V DC external power sources that can be used to extend field life. Camera also supports AC Power Mode that allows for high-performance and perpetual use of the device.

Works with SD/SDHC Class 4 cards or higher, and can handle up to 32 GB. Memory cards are sold separately

Camera is compatible with Eye-Fi Connect X2/Pro X2, which allows the camera to transmit images to a Wi-Fi network and the internet. Moultrie recommends (but does not support) the "X2" series of cards from Eye-Fi.

When set to "Overwrite Oldest," the M-990i will erase the oldest photos and videos to create free space for new photos and videos when the memory card is at full capacity. Or if you want to keep all of your old images, you can also set the camera to stop recording new images when the SD card memory is full.

Optional security feature requires a 5-digit code to operate the camera.

Length: 0:10 Mins
I own a Moultrie A 7 trail camera which is been very satisfactory in identifying animals traveling in my hunting area but, during the past winter there were many days when the temperature was in the teens and at times were below zero The alkaline batteries in the A 7 cease to work because of the cold. I purchased the 20 14 Moultrie 990 I because it could use AA lithium batteries which operate well and cold weather. There have been some claims that the camera will drain the batteries quickly if freeze-frame is activated. I wanted to see if this was true when used according to the manufacturers' recommendations.
I called Moultrie and made sure that I talked to a technical expert rather than the customer service person. I asked her specifically if there was a problem with the freeze-frame feature draining batteries in cold weather. She said that she had not heard about any problems with that feature. She said that the time lapse and the hybrid modes drained batteries quicker than the motion detect mode. I asked her if I used one of those modes with the freeze-frame feature activated about how long would the batteries last. She said that they would last about three months or about 900 pictures. I pressed the issue of batteries and asked her if it was possible to drain batteries in one to three days. She said that the only way that that could happen would be if a person were using weak inferior batteries in cold weather. The lady listened to and answered every question I asked in a very courteous and respectful manner. She took all the time that I needed and was very specific with her answers. I have every reason to believe that she was very knowledgeable about the subjects and was being very truthful.
My hope was to test the Moultrie 990 I camera during some cold conditions.

Bought three of these. One motion sensor worked up to 20 feet. Second camera motion sensor worked up to 30 feet. Tried default setting and also made many custom setups, with no improvement. Called Moultrie, only suggestion was to reset the unit because of the brand of SD I was using. Did this and no change. Really liked camera and wanted it to work, but the motion sensor was unacceptable. Sent all three back.

When I get a new camera, computer, etc., the first thing I do is check to see if the firmware is up-to-date. So I went to the Moultrie site and downloaded the latest. Then I tried to see what the current firmware level was only to be denied. This camera does not tell you. Then I tried to apply the latest firmware. It failed without any indication why. I called their support, only to be castigated for trying to apply an upgrade when the camera was not malfunctioning! HUH? The firmware upgrade did some subtle things that I would not know whether were working correctly or not. I asked if there was any way to check the camera's firmware level and was again asked what was broken! Very bad experience.

The camera claims very high resolution stills and 720 HD video. Neither were as good as my GoPro or Sony set to the same resolutions. So I suspect the lens quality is not very good.

So, this camera is ok, but don't expect high quality images or much from the support staff.

We've been using the Moultrie M-990i for about a week. Once we found the right spot we were able to pull down lots of images of deer and one of a coyote that were very clear (daylight).

The images at night are in black and white and considerably less clear but still interesting to look at.

We purchased the Master Lock 8418KADCAM-TMB Python Adjustable Locking Cable and that works nicely to secure the box to a tree so nobody can walk off with it. Tip: But the tiny keys immediately on your key ring or risk losing them.

Attaching the camera to trees is a snap using the included strap.

Some tips based upon our amateur adventures:

1. There is an aiming mode which allows you to see how far the camera is being triggered (a red light glows). Use this when you first setup the Moultrie to check your range. I found the camera images were best when aimed into a rather enclosed area versus trying to photograph a very large field (in our test the range seemed to be about 30-40 feet to get a reliable trigger of the camera).

2. Buy an extra SD card if you are going to be walking any distance to check the camera. This way you can take the spare card with you and just swap them at the site versus having to review the images on the small display screen of the Moultrie.

3. Battery life seems pretty good - we've had ours out for about 5 days on regular AA batteries. I'm sure we're coming close to needing to replace them. My sense is that you'll get about a week out of a set of batteries before needing to worry that they are fully discharged.

4. There's an option on this device (and I suspect most) which allows you to delete all pictures.

11/23/13 The first M-990i I purchased lasted just over two weeks until it started getting cold outside, but we'd had it just over a month. It started draining the batteries. I put in a new set and set it outside and again drained batteries by the next day. Duracell batteries (Not Duralock) were used. I put in another fresh set and it would only allow me to punch in my password and set it up for pictures before the screen would go blank.

It was just past the vendor return policy of a month and I had to send it directly to Moultrie. $10 for shipping and two weeks later, I got a new one, as they could not repair the first one. They just sent a new camera and it showed up without any warning or communication about the bad one. Minimal customer service. That's OK, it keeps costs down.

Anyway, I got the new one and finally had a chance to set it up. This one also drains batteries within a day, but just does not take pictures or video; yes, it's below freezing. My wife said it took 3 pictures and then died. It has gone from the 30s down into the 20s outside. While it has been getting down to the mid 20s at night, that should not be an issue. We have 8 other cameras outdoors; 1 Wildgame Innovations 6MP(3 or 4 years old and our first camera) and 7 Primos Truth Cam 35s (4 that are 1.5 years old and 3 newer; our favorites at about $80 each). While they are less expensive game cameras than this Moultrie, we've had them for years and they are all still working.

We thought we'd upgrade to this Moultrie for the audio, video and resolution for one specific area. I will now have to send this one back, if I can't convince Amazon to have them refund my money and pay for its return. The 1st camera was promising and worked so well for about two weeks; not a day with the second.
