Editorial Reviews

Drawing inspiration from the life and work of the towering spiritual figure Georges Ivanovitch Gurdieff, Mount Analogue is one of Zorn's greatest creations. Taking the form of a mystical journey, the music jumps from one world to another weaving a rich tapestry that blends world music, jazz, contemporary classical and more. Featuring Cyro Baptista's fabulous quartet Banquet Of The Spirits augmented by the brilliant Kenny Wollesen on vibes. This is the latest volume in Zorn's mystic series and a new major extended composition. Described as aural cinema. Even after 30 years Zorn's file card pieces have never been equalled. A masterwork.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not so fast . . . May 30, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
In the spirit of there being a balance of opinions, I would like to offer an alternative take on "Mount Analogue." This will be a contrast to the previous five star reviews which have almost verbatim asserted the same information found on Amazon's official write-up and the disc's inner card which boldly presents itself as 'one of Zorn's greatest creations' that 'has never been equalled. A masterwork!' Setting such hype aside, "Mount Analogue" is interesting but not that compelling. Orchestrally oriented music, the project is infused with many musical flavors including Middle Eastern sounds, jazz and spiritual ambiance. The mood runs the spectrum from light to menacing. The cinematic piece is infused with a balance of avant-garde and melodic passages. Along these lines, it bears a similarity to "At the Gates of Paradise" and works best in the background. Part of the issue with this mystical journey is its schizophrenic personality. The adventure consists of vignettes that almost never last for more than a minute before drifting into another, which is probably why nobody bothered to track out the 38 minute composition. Once the listener is able to mentally grab a compelling vignette, it vanishes like a mirage in the desert. So while there are moments of profound beauty, they are short-lived. In particular, there are memorable chapters that invoke old world cathedrals, satanic sacrifices and mystical desert visions. A few of the musical paintings bear an eerie resemblance to Pink Floyd's 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun.' The liner notes explain the Georges Ivanovitch Gurdieff inspiration which adds depth and a great background story. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Zorn masterpiece February 8, 2012
Format:Audio CD
One piece, 38 minutes long played by Cyro Baptista's Banquet Of The Spirit quartet, Shanir Blumenkranz(Bass, Oud), Tim Keiper(drums, percussion), Brian Marsella(organ, piano) and Kenny Wolesen ( vibes and chimes) composed and conducted by John Zorn. All players are credited with vovals but it is a kind of chanting, not much singing in here.
The music is a blend of jazz, world music(Jewish, Middle Eastern, latin), contemporary classic, very varied, engaging.
One of Zorn's most beautiful and accessible compositions

5.0 out of 5 stars ZORN GREATEST THAN EVER April 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Incredible homenage to the world of Gurdjieff. A blend of spiritual music, jazz, world music and contemporarary and simple diferents sounds. Never before Zorn mix all this things so clear and so good. Cyro Baptista and Banquet Quartet create an very special atmosphere. During 38 minutes you can hear a world of emotions, of feelings. Is a incredible composition , the best of all his Mystic series. Is more than only music, is a exercises of try to find the roots of the thinking of Gurdjieff. I know that Zorn have different approaches to the music, but this one probably is the best resume of all his adventure . A real gif to all his fans and also to anybody to love the music, all the musics. Great.
