Mountain Ash by Elna Fone Nugent was given to me by my Mother on my birthday this past year. She and Elna play Bridge together in the Berkshires. They are both in their eighties and have led similar lives, both married to men who worked for General Electric and both raised families in the same area. Their lives have been marked by times of trial and blessings.

I wasn't sure I would be interested in this book, but my Mom has always been good at understanding her children's likes and dislikes, so I trusted her judgment. I also enjoy reading books that are set in surroundings that are familiar to me, as this one is.

I can honestly conclude that I have never enjoyed a memoir as much as I have this book. I found I had so much in common with Elna and her words of wisdom have made a significant difference in my life. We both worked for the Berkshire Eagle and the Norman Rockwell Museum. I was fascinated to read that her children were models for some of Rockwell's paintings. Elna also shared a common passion for the arts and faith. I loved the way she includes small descriptive details of the past to help transport you through time and space.

She conveys well the chapters of her life in the chapters of the book, emphasizing the most important and meaningful experiences, that leave the reader feeling a personal connection and empathy with her life's experiences. It's amazing to me that she recalls her thoughts even as a newborn and even in the context of previously lived lives. She has an exquisite mind that is sensitive to her environment in both the physical and spiritual realm.

After reading her memoir, I have found strength in her ability to endure struggle, and in the process, still be able to appreciate the grace that abounds us. She has done us all a favor by writing her memoir and I am truly grateful to her for this.

Excellent! A bitter-sweet memoir. Elna, how sad for you, and Jack, after all the beautiful years that you and Jack had together.
