The book has seven chapters whose titles for the most part give not a hint of what is included; the chapter titled "Blood, Sweat & Cheers" includes two essays, one an introduction to mountain-bike racing and the other on disciplines of mountain biking. One section includes trail maps and brief descriptions of 54 rides extracted from mountain-biking resource guides for 30 states. Western U.S. states are heavily represented. This section could prove helpful for the acquisitions librarian trying to build a collection of mountain-biking trail guides. Other useful sections include records of major international mountain-bike contests and a directory of bicycle manufacturers, accessories, tools, and food and drink suppliers. This section also includes a bibliography of magazines, books, videos, CDs, and associations as well as a compilation of touring companies, resorts, and destinations in a state-by-state listing. A section titled "E-Book" includes more than 120 World Wide Web sites and is followed by a glossary. Throughout the essays, safety and responsible mountain biking are emphasized.
Public libraries located within one of the mountain communities that attract mountain bikers will find the Mountain Biker's Almanac worth purchasing.
