Grade 5-8-- While both books offer an abundance of full-color action photos, Mountain Biking provides little practical information. The chapter on machinery mainly discusses clothing, and the chapter on maintenance gives general advice on cleaning, lubrication, and adjustments, but does not explain how to do any of these things. Allen repeatedly tells readers to look elsewhere for answers. They should take his suggestion, and turn to Rob Van der Plas's The Mountain Bike Book (Bicycle Bks., 1990), which is far more informative and comprehensive. Backpacking is a better effort. Holmes explains things simply, yet in enough detail for beginners looking to buy hiking boots and proper clothing, fit a backpack, plan an outing, and select a campsite. He stresses preparation, conditioning, and common sense. Chapters on survival skills and the use of topographic maps and orienteering compasses are very useful. While the book can stand on its own, it makes a good companion to Winnett and Findling's Backpacking Basics (Wilderness Pr., 1988). --George Delalis, Oakland Public Library, CA
