Grade 3-4-These series entries are timely and present many facts, though most can be found in other sources. In Blue Whale, a variety of species are touched upon, and their similarities and differences are described. A good deal of the discussion is devoted to whaling and efforts to prevent it worldwide. Countries that have dropped out of international organizations and are resuming commercial whaling are cited. In Gorilla, basic facts about habitat, physical characteristics, and behavior are presented, focusing on the species's threatened status and on current projects to protect it. The presentation is balanced in regard to reasons given for habitat destruction by local citizens. Content in both titles is useful and interesting, but the accompanying game and puzzle activities do little to support the subject matter. The boxed facts in Blue Whale do contain information, but those in Gorilla are inconsistent-some direct readers to find animals or unscramble names of plants. Simple indexes and lists of embassies and organizations are included. The texts are illustrated with pale watercolors. Additional purchases for encouraging children to become actively involved in the protection of endangered animals.
