Best wind fleece jacket I have had.

Where I live in the Northeast, it can get very cold and windy during the winter, with real feel temperatures down to zero even when the sun is out.

First off, I'm 6'2" 170-175 pounds (athletic build) and the large fits me exactly as a mid-layer to outer-layer should; it has enough room for a fleece and shirt underneath, but fits snug enough for a water-proof shell to fit over it. The neck is comfortable, the sleeves are long enough, and I have enough room to move without it being baggy. I bought the sapphire blue/black and it looks cool enough, but I only wear this for backcountry trips, backpacking, day-hikes, and trail runs. I spend my time mostly in the San Bernardino Mountains, San Gabriels, Sierra Nevadas, and Santa Anas as I live in Southern California (temporarily), and the jacket is perfect as an outer layer unless it's winter, or it's a rainy day. The pit zips provide excellent ventilation when you're hiking on a day with strong wind gusts, yet is otherwise warm. It doesn't have a hood, but I prefer hats or a beanie anyway, since hoods have always made me feel claustrophobic, and they also affect my peripheral vision, which I don't enjoy on steep, rocky terrain. The pockets seem to be in an odd place until you strap on your large backpack for extended trips and realize the hip belts interfere with normal pockets. The higher placement allows you to access your pockets if need be, and besides, who hikes with their hands in their pockets? Obviously no jacket is perfect for every condition, and in my experience, no jacket works for every person since we all have different preferences and body types, but overall I've found this jacket to be a great asset on the trail and I can honestly recommend it. I hope this helps!

I am 6'2", 165 lbs, and I got a medium. The length was okay, but the sleeves were definitely too short. The chest was perfect, but the mid section was too loose. It seems this jacket was designed for short and stocky people. The neck was awkwardly tight when fully zipped, too.

As a jacket, I didn't use it very much. But I did use it on some backpacking and 14er trips. It was warm, wind proof, and nice looking (black/black). It's a shame it didn't fit well. As a replacement, I got the Arc'Teryx Gamma LT Hoody. It's more expensive, but the small fits absolutely beautifully, everywhere, and it's a beautiful jacket too.

Mountain Hardwear makes high quality products for the outdoors, and this jacket is one of them. I've owned it for a couple of years and really like it. Here's why.

    1. I'm a serious runner and run outdoors all year long. Where I live in the Northeast, it can get very cold and windy during the winter, with real feel temperatures down to zero even when the sun is out. With proper layering, this jacket keeps me nice and warm when I run, and definitely lives up to its name as a wind stopper.

    2. The cinch cord at the bottom is easy to use and comes in very handy when it's windy or else freezing cold and I want to "seal in" as much body heat as possible. There are three large and easy to zip pockets on the front, a nice front zipper, and pit zips that work great to accommodate changes in temperature.

For those of you not familiar with the term, pit zips are zippered armpit vents found on better running jackets. I wouldn't buy a winter running jacket that didn't have them. The reason is that depending on how far down you open the zipper, you can let out body heat to avoid or minimize having sweat drenched armpits on whatever you layer under the running jacket. Not only is such drenching uncomfortable, but also will make you feel cold after a while.

The pit zips on this jacket have zipper pulls on each end of the zipper (the older version of this jacket had only one zipper pull). That's a very nice feature because it lets you adjust the size of the opening more precisely and center it over wherever the sweat is building up.

    3. The jacket runs true to size, so don't size up or down when ordering if you don't have a chance to try it on first.

I actually returned this in favor of a Mountain Hardware Android. This jacket fits slim, and I do like that.
Do note that this jacket is part fleece. The lighter color (in my case, red) is fleece outer. The rest is a shell.
I didn't want the wear and tear of a fleece outer, so I got the Android, which is all soft shell outer.

The original version of this fleece was bar none the best fleece jacket I ever owned. This is the newer version and somehow misses the mark. While it is still way better than the inferior North Face Denali fleece, I wish MH hadn't messed with a good thing. PS- Bring back the interior zippered pocket!

The jacket is comfortable and warm in all types of weather. I've worn it from fall to winter without needing additional layers. I had a previous version of this jacket for years and loved it. The sizing on this is a little smaller in the arm/shoulder area than my last one. The wind proof on the is great too. I really love this jacket!

The sizing is very large. I ordered a big size but it's rally very huge. I think I can fit an extra kid in there too!

I would recommend this to anyone. My husband got it for Christmas and hasn't taken it off since:). Keeps him very warm even when it is freezing outside. Just put the old Columbia in the Goodwill Box.
