5.0 out of 5 stars Freeze dried food
I have been eating freeze dried foods for many years as I hiked the Appalachian Trail, the Long Trail and the Colorado Trail. There are some I like and some that I do not. I am now at the point where I only buy ones I have tried and like. This is one of my favorites. I should add that there are Beef Stroganoff entries and there are Beef Stroganoff entries with...

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent meal, but could be better
We relaxed at Strawberry Creek again, the meadow there full of budding wild rose. Brief showers had cleansed the air in the Snake Indian valley, and sun returned to dry everything out. Dinner was Mountain House Chicken Stew. Potatoes and chicken weren't fully rehydrated at nine minutes, so we gave it five more. The stew wasn't terribly flavorful, something an infusion...

5.0 out of 5 stars So good I would eat it at home., April 12, 2009

This stuff is actually good, not like good for being freeze dried, but definitely holds it's own against hamburger helper. Just cook it longer than the directions say(about 13 minutes), and I add about 2 ounces more water.

Much prefer Beef and Rice but not available anymore so had to settle for this. Except for the astronomical Salt content, it's not bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honestly .... Delicious, October 4, 2011

I can't say enough about Mountain House foods in general. As a very active family, we enjoy being able to take 'gourmet' meals along with us on backpacking trips.

We really are particular. In fact, if the scout trailer can come with us, everything is made from scratch. But there are times when we are backpacking where space is at a minimum. This is when Mountain House comes in.

Mountain House meals are hearty, delicious, easy to prepare, and really hit the spot. I do HIGHLY recommend using only boiling water when reconstituting the meals. We have had results that are less than spectacular when we just used hot water.

I also recommend using a mess kit to cook in. The metal containers hold heat well and you can put them back on the flame if need be. If you are really saving space and want to use the packet to cook in, wrap it in something to keep it hot.

The beef stroganoff itself is creamy and beefy and has just a touch of tang. The noodles turn out great. Just be aware: if you are starving after an entire day hike, you may want two servings.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars REALLY Surprisingly good!, July 26, 2011

It provides a felling, Hearty meal!
Bought it as trial run for re-vamping my 72 to 168 hour kit/s.
I'd say 2 people IF you added some veggies and a desert. On its on its just a little more then enough for one person but not enough for two.
Over all the flavor was really good, might be a touch salty for some. Will need some help with ground pepper.
For reference: Beats Hamburger Helper and their single servings hands down! I know that is NOT much of an accomplishment but it is the only reference point I had.

Just add boiling water (1pint), wait a few minutes(11) and dinner is ready. At home I added about 2 tbps of sour cream to boost it a little.
Easy to follow instruction and you can eat right out of the bag. Good stuff. Don't forget to remove the anti-oxidizer.

4.0 out of 5 stars delicious, February 2, 2012

This packet of food was very good. Easy to prepare. Good portion size. I am putting together my 3-month emergency supply so I'm shopping around. Because of the price I have to determine if I leave this brand out or use it merely as a change in routine item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Stuff, September 15, 2011

I used this freeze-dried food for a recent bicycle tour. Although pricey, these rations are light weight and easy to use. The taste is not bad - sort of on the level of 'Hamburger Helper' - and does quite well as a quick and easy meal to prepare. Especially considering that you just tear off the top of the foil bag at the designated spot, and pour the hot water into the bag - which can be resealed.
2 servings is going a bit far in my opinion as I can easily eat this myself - especially if you imagine that someone would be hiking or biking a long day prior to preparing this entrée.
Also, I found that if you actually use 2 full cups (~.47L) of boiling water as the directions specify - to my tastes the meal is too 'soupy' - so I use 1 1/2 cups (~.35L) to get a more thick stew-like consistency. Of course that is just my preference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tasty, chunky, thoroughly enjoyable, January 28, 2010
A day trip to Maligne Lake in search of moose yielded bighorn sheep and elk along the roads. The Colins Range (Karen's favorites) jutted forth like broken ribs of some prehistoric giant. To celebrate, we ate Mountain House Beef Stroganoff. It had tasty chunks of beef and mushrooms, and was thoroughly rehydrated at nine minutes. We felt the sauce could have a richer, beefier flavor, but were thoroughly satisfied. At an earlier date, camped in snow fields at the base of Oregon's Mount Jefferson, it kept bitter cold at bay in the fading light. Pack extras.

Dinner was Mountain House Chicken Stew. Potatoes and chicken weren't fully rehydrated at nine minutes, so we gave it five more. The stew wasn't terribly flavorful, something an infusion of spices might help. The textures of potato, carrot and pea were largely indistinguishable. Some bits weren't fully rehydrated even with the extra time. On the plus side, the stew is nicely chunky and the broth thick. While Mountain House could improve on this, we will continue to buy it.
