I have been eating freeze dried foods for many years as I hiked the Appalachian Trail, the Long Trail and the Colorado Trail. There are some I like and some that I do not. I am now at the point where I only buy ones I have tried and like. This is one of my favorites. I should add that there are Beef Stroganoff entries and there are Beef Stroganoff entries with Noodles. I prefer the latter.

I ordered two of these meals for my husband and I during our most recent camping trip. I'd forgotten how big these meals were! We cooked two of these (one for each of us) plus a side of MHM veggies; it more than filled my husband up and I couldn't finish mine. I had to pass my leftovers to our buddy who was camping with us. As for my husband, he was full well before he finished his but "powered through" to finish it. As for the taste, it was delicious and a welcomed hot meal during our times in the woods.

Was looking for something to put at the camp for a quick meal in a pinch. Decided I better try it before subjecting others to it. Followed the directions on the package and it turned out pretty good. I was a little bland, but salt and pepper fixed that up. One serving as measured would not be enough to fill up a normal american male, but two servings hit the spot and would surely get me by. I do worry that it recommends that it be consumed entirely within a week of opening. It's good enough that I would keep it at work and eat it for lunch (not saying a lot as I will also eat Ramen Noodles for lunch occasionally). Not bad at all for something that I could bury in the yard and dig it up 15 years later and eat. I am only giving it 5 stars because the price is a little high.

This stuff is actually good, not like good for being freeze dried, but definitely holds it's own against hamburger helper. Just cook it longer than the directions say(about 13 minutes), and I add about 2 ounces more water.

Where freeze dried foods are concerned, this stuff is pretty good. I keep a bunch of Mountain House packs around in case of hurricane or zombies or whatever, and occasionally I'll just grab one of these out because I don't feel like cooking anything. I'd probably do that more often, to tell the truth, but these are kind of pricey and I'm not really that lazy.

The beef stroganoff pretty much tastes like beef stroganoff. I'm fairly sure that I could live on the stuff for a week without feeling deprived. It really couldn't be easier to prepare. Just dump 16 oz. of boiling water in there and let it sit for ten minutes.

No complaints.

I used to use freeze-dried products when I canoe camped years (okay, maybe a couple of decades) ago in the BWCAW. It was pretty good stuff, but it was always camping food for me. Something to eat when the fresh stuff ran out.

A few years ago, I decided to purchase some MRE's for emergency food storage, and during that time the manufacturers decided that shelf life wasn't as long as they thought it was. (A #10 can from Mountain House will have 4 times the shelf life of an properly stored MRE, the MH pouches only a couple years longer.) I also wasn't very impressed with the MRE food as I rotated it out. (If you ever somehow get a veggie burger in BBQ sauce meal, I dare you to try it.)

I searched for a better alternative and freeze-dried came to the top of the list again, so I purchased a Mountain House 72-hour pack (from Amazon) as an experiment to try few varieties. The first one taste-tested was the Beef Stroganoff. It had a manufacture date of 5 months previous to purchase.

It was amazingly tasty. The only complaint was it lacked any sort of vegetable, and I'm thinking rehydrating some peas in the boiling water that re-constitutes the food might do the trick, and give the food a little color. I will have to try it. I also found the full pint of water wasn't completely absorbed. I think an little less water (15oz) might make for a more cohesive dish.

I have one more stroganoff pouch, will try my ideas when I use it. But I have other flavors to try first. :-)

Anyway, the Beef Stroganoff passed with flying colors in terms of taste and consistency. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this for emergency storage or as a camping meal.

I ordered only one of these to try it out before camping / a natural disaster would make me need it. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised. It tastes almost as good as my beef stroganoff from scratch! We just added hot water, resealed the pouch, waited a few minutes and dinner was served. I'll definitely be purchasing more mountain house dry meals.

Ate this on a five day hike in RMNP. Dehydrated food is what it is, but it's pretty satisfying after hiking all day, Buying a #10 can is certainly cheaper than single serving pouches, plus pouring it into freezer ziplock bags takes up much less space in your bear canister. Best to go with beef over chicken or pork dishes, texture is better. Green beans were fair, scrambled eggs were a little gross.
