Before going on a backpacking trip, I decided to compare the Mountain House eggs and bacon as well as the backpackers pantry eggs and bacon. Overall I have to say the Mountain House product would be my first choice. Neither tasted like home cooked bacon and eggs, but the Mountain House tasted best to me. In addition there is no mess to clean up when you are finished, although you do have to pour out excess water from the bag before eating. The bacon appears to be real bacon, although its tiny pieces so the flavor is there, but its definately not like eating a real strip of bacon. The texture of the eggs was sort of light and fluffy but slightly more wet than a home cooked egg. The whole meal was better once some salt and pepper was added.

Style Name: #10 CAN Verified Purchase
We purchased a couple different #10 cans from Mountain House for our fishing vacation. We were flying into the site, so had a very strict weight limit. We simply could not bring eggs, bacon, ground beef etc due to those limitations. We did not expect any of it to actually taste good, but we were prepared to make due. Much to our surprise, it was all VERY good.
The eggs and bacon were delicious - and I don't mean in a "really good for freeze dried food" kind of way. If we'd eaten this at a coffee shop, we'd have said the same thing. It was really flavorful and the texture was no different than fresh cooked eggs. We had brought a small bottle of hot sauce in preparation of needing to mask the taste, but it wasn't needed. The eggs have a smokey flavor which matches very well with the bacon. For breakfast, I made an entire can for our party of 5 (including 3 men who eat a lot). We had just a small amount left over, so hopefully that would help you judge how much you would need.
The ground beef was also a very pleasant surprise. The only difference between the rehydrated freeze-dried ground beef and freshly browned ground beef was the absence of grease. The flavor and texture were the same. We made a big pot of chili one day for lunch, and spaghetti on a night that the fishing was slow. We didn't skimp with the ground beef on either meal, yet still had around 1/3 of the can left after those 2 meals. My guess-timation would be that there is the equivalent of around 4-5lbs of ground beef in the can after it rehydrates.
These products are not cheap of course, but they were exactly what we needed. The taste was so fantastic that we are going to purchase more to keep in our pantry for future use.

Tried the Mountain House scrambled eggs with bacon this morning for breakfast. The pouch contained 1 serving for 1 person, and the portion size was large. While not as good as home cooked eggs, the taste was acceptable with lots of bacon.

Style Name: Pro Pak Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I just love these packets for my backpacking and camping needs. I included a photograph with a regular package placed between the new vacuumed packed ones. The ingredients and sizes are similar, I hope they can keep the prices the same. Vacuum packed won't expand and pop at high elevations. I have had regular sealed foods pop, but never a mountain house but the highest I think I've been with packed foods is little over 1200ft.
What makes these so great is since the are freeze dried, they weight very little. That's important if you have to carry all your supplies on your back for multiple days.
Even regular camping they can come in handy if you make it back to camp late and it's raining or your just exhausted, then you just heat water are pour in package and minutes later a hot meal.
As far as taste they are pretty good. You could say they are high in salt but so is a can of soup.
If your hoofing it on the trail and sweating, your going to need that salt anyway.
With the egg meals there always seems to be a bit of water left over. I would rather have to much than not enough to allow the food to soak in and expand.
When your on the trail this food tastes fantastic, if you want to spice it up bring along some salsa packets or pepper flakes.
Nice thing about it also is clean cooking. With boiling water you can keep your pans clean just heat and pour into pouch. Hard to wash your dishes on trail without a water source or regulations are against it.
Even for people just trying to have an emergency stash of food in their homes that can be packed for quick evacuation these things can sit in the shelf for years. Current packing is good till 2026.

Recently, our camping club had a tasting event and this was one of the foods that were featured. They were actually good, despite my misgivings about freeze dried cooked eggs. I actually liked them better and found them tastier than the powdered eggs that are often camp fare.

The "eggs" look like big "cheese puffs" in the package. We added the water, let them stand a little bit longer than the directions asked for, drained off the excess water and dumped them on a plate. They looked like scrambled eggs! The flavor and texture were both reasonably good, although a bit too salty for my tastes. The bacon taste was just right too. Overall, I was surprised and pleased. This has become a "must have" for our backpacks now, and it definitely beats that off flavor of scrambled powdered eggs.
