This review is from: Mountain Outlaw (Paperback)
I decided to get this book after seeing it reviewed in a Scottish magazine. I have always been interested in highwaymen, outlaws, bushrangers (pick your poison really).
This is the first Scottish highwayman that I have read about and it is a very interesting tale about Ewan McPhee(I can't spell the Gaelic name). It gives information which appears to have been throughly researched by the author about his early life, how he met his wife and the life they made together on their little island. While this book does make for an interesting read, I do have two complaints - the author has written in a storytelling/recount style and while it is interesting to read, it blurs the lines for the reader between what is fact about Ewan and what the author has surmised based on his research. Another small annoyance I had was the lack of information about what happened to his wife and children after his death which I think it equally important to the tale. A good read - but take some of the information with a pinch of salt and do your own research. |
