Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered edition of the Dutch Prog Rock band's 1973 album. With the release of The Mountain Queen on the Polydor label, the band appeared on the classic UK TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test". Perhaps the band's finest album, this reissue has been remastered from the original tapes and also fully restores artwork and features a new essay. Alquin were one of the most innovative bands to burst forth on the Dutch Progressive Rock scene of the early 1970's. Adopting a Jazz influenced Progressive rock approach and attaining a sound unique from their contemporaries, the band soon found an appreciative audience throughout Europe. Esoteric. 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazzy Prog Jam October 1, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Alquin's second album, Mountain Queen, was originally released in 1973. It reminds me most of Traffic, or early Caravan. However, you might also hear hints of early Pink Floyd or early King Crimson.

Ferdinand Bakker is skilled and soulful on electric violin and especially on electric guitar, using distortion pedal to great effect. There are long instrumental jams that feature great flute and saxophone from Ronald Ottenhoff, reminiscent of Chris Wood's work with Traffic.

There are six songs on the album, but the best are the three longest, The Dance (13:04), Mountain Queen (14:49), and Mr. Barnum Jr.'s Magnificent and Fabulous City (part one) (8:17). They really spread out and jam, with great grooves, and ever-shifting moods. Lyrics are sparse, which leaves room for outstanding compositions and musicianship. Possibly one of the best albums you've never heard of.
