Mountain Tracks: Vol. 1 is a must have,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mountain Tracks: Volume 1 (Audio CD)
This album includes previously unreleased YMSB originals and fan favorites such as "Snow On the Pines", and "Keep On Going". Traditional tunes such as "Sharecroppers Son" and "My Gal" highlight Yonder's musical roots, while "Legalize It" shows off the bands knack for choosing and blowing the roof off covers you never thought you'd hear bluegrass style. Mountain Tracks is a testament to the bands reputation for creating outstanding live performances. Without a doubt this a "must have" for any Yonder Mountain String Band collection.

I tripped over this band on XM's jam bands station and immedietly fell in love with them. It is what I refer to as bobble head music as you cannot listen with bobbing your head, not unless you are catatonic.
The music is fast paced and well performed, with humour sprinkled around. While bluegrass is not one of my top music genres this band has made me seek out more. This album is somehing I play over and over again while driving, especially on long trips as it is impossible to fall asleep while it's on.

This cd is what hooked me like a fish and hung me out to dry. This was the time my ear's ever heard from what is the yonder mountain string band about 3 1/2 years ago. After first hearing this I was thoroughly impressed with the sheer energy coming from just a banjo, guitar, mandolin, and bass. It's amazing to hear how the boys just feed off of each other and the crowd. Hearing "legalize it" confirmed that this was no traditional bluegrass band, there was just sooo much more to these boys than just bluegrass. However, the opening track "sharecropper's son" is as traditional as it gets, which just shows how talented and versatile these guys can be. There are a number of different musical styles on this cd (mostly rooted in bluegrass) so if you are a fan of jambands or just good music in general, I would highly recommend this cd. Even if you think you wouldn't like bluegrass just give this a chance, these boys are the real deal. This is THE perfect cd to start with if you are a new fan or even remotely interested in Yonder. I would buy this cd first, then start with their studio album's elevation and town by town or mountain tracks 2 or 3. AND DON'T FORGET TO GO SEE THEM LIVE!!!

CD's good but...,

This CD is a very good recording of a very good band but much as a great appreciation of "Oh Brother, where art thou" is gained by viewing the movie, "Mountain Tracks Volume #1" will be enjoyed more after seeing the band live. Still though, it's good stuff.

See them live, skip the CD,

I've seen these guys live in Moscow a couple of times, and I've always loved the shows. They are nothing short of fun, and occasionally these guys get in a groove that's so good I could cry. This CD on the other hand is just okay. The songs are okay, and the vocals are okay (although the improvs are really bad). There are glimpses of genius, but they are short-lived.
