Gr. 2-4. Young Heart Avamir is still on the run in these latest entries in the Ready-for-Chapters Unicorn's Secret series. A group of gypsies comes across the cave where Heart is hiding a young unicorn and its mother. Heart fools the gypsies into thinking the foal's horn is stuck on with tree gum, and they take her along on their travels. Heart loves this taste of family life, but by the end of the third book, Silver Bracelet, she must move on alone or risk endangering both the gypsies and the unicorns. The books, originally planned as a quartet, now have expanded into a longer series, so the fourth book, Mountains of the Moon, is a bridge title, ending with Heart's realization that she is somehow linked to the unicorns and the distant mountains are where they belong. Duey once again shows impressive skill at weaving an intriguing fantasy with strongly realized characters and setting while still using the short words and sentences new readers require. Rayyan's illustrations, one per chapter, are old-fashioned and luscious. Susan Dove Lempke

Kathleen Duey is a fantastic author! She makes the characters come alive. You feel a part of the story. The book is excellent for girl young readers who love horses, unicorns, or animals.
