Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Ages 5^-8. Old Bailey, a wise and kindly mare, is loved by all the horses at the Rocky Mountain Stables except beautiful young Stocking--who doesn't miss a chance to remind Bailey of the ill fate that befalls old horses. When a new owner takes over the stables and promises big changes, Old Bailey knows her days are numbered. Her courageous decision to escape, and Stocking's surprising reaction, will leave readers cheering. Zhang's lovely acrylic illustrations provide a scenic backdrop of majestic mountains and peaceful countryside. The story starts rather slowly, but children who stick with it will be rewarded with a tale of unusual depth that raises some intriguing questions. With more text than the average picture book, this is also a good choice for youngsters making the transition to chapter books. Lauren Peterson

5.0 out of 5 stars I think it was a beautiful story, January 19, 1999
By A Customer
"To the Mountains By Morning" is a touching story about a mare (female horse) named old Bailey and another horse named Stocking. Old Bailey had been at the barn for 10 years. She was the oldest horse there and was always welcoming the new horses. But Stocking was different from the other horses, he did not want to be Old Bailey's friend. One day a new owner comes to the barn. He wears tight green pants and always carries a crop. There are eight horses in the barn and eight new horses will be arriving soon. Old Bailey knows that there are only 15 stalls in the barn and one horse will have to go. Old Bailey knows that she will be the one to leave this time. That night, Old Bailey is in the paddock with Stockings. Stockings thinks to himself "I can't just watch while they take Old Bailey away tommorrow." "I'm going to the mountains," says Old Bailey. "To the mountains by morning!" says Stockings. They ran around as fast as they could to build up speed and jumped the fence to freedom. Will they make it to the mountains by morning? Read the book and find out.
