More About the Author

Born, raised, and still a resident of Rochester, NY, Randi Minetor discovered the backcountry wonders of America's national parks in 1992 with her husband, photographer/lighting designer Nic Minetor. That first trip changed her life, and by 2000, the Minetors had pledged to see all 391 (now 407) national parks in their lifetimes. They found a way to subsidize this passion in 2006, when they began writing and photographing books on the parks for The Globe Pequot Press. Today Randi has written 27 books for GPP, ranging from national park travel to American history to the best day hikes in upstate New York. To date, they have visited 296 national parks. In addition, Nic's photography appears in three Quick Reference Guides to the Birds, Trees, and Wildflowers of New York City, and one to the Birds of New York State. Randi has also served as a ghostwriter for several non-fiction bestsellers and other books for her corporate clients. The Minetors live in Rochester, NY.

This cute, tiny book fits easily into a pocket, a backback, or a handbag and is full of information on the GSMNP. Best of all are the two maps that fold out of the front and back covers and give a great overview of the Park so that you get an idea of where the various sites are in relation to the others. A great complement to the more detailed map of Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains map (see my review).

The little guidebook is easy to take along when hiking, contains some good information about what to see, and also contains two clever fold-out maps.

If you are interested in seeing wildlife inside the park and/or doing a bit of hiking you will find this book very useful.

We were skeptical about purchasing the "Great Smoky Mountains National Park Pocket Guide" because some miniature books lack substance and quality information. However, we were very pleased with this detailed text and its friendly pop-out map; it is cute, small, and very easy to travel with.

Bon voyage!

While not the most comprehensive guide to the Smoky's, this is a decent quick reference and "fun" guide which does not take up a lot of space. I say "fun" as it has little "pop up" maps unfold/self-fold when opening or closing the front/rear covers.

Hard covered and small enough to fit into a day pack, you will find yourself reaching for this one more than all of the other "Smoky" guides, maps etc. which you crammed into the glovebox. It is compact, easy to use, pretty much covers anything you need to know for a quick trip to the Smoky's and did I mention fun?

If you are gathering materials on the Smoky's for a first trip or a return, this is worth taking along. The kids will also like this quick reference guide to the rules, campgrounds, trails, roads and sights of Americas most visited national park. In fact, writing this review has prompted me to check Amazon for other National Park Pocket Guides by this publisher as these are great, yet simple, little reference books.

The book was fun to read while we were on our way to TN and the fun facts throughout are priceless but overall... we didn't use the book as much as I would have liked. Its a good starter book for the Smokies.

We used this handy guide during our recent vacation to the park. It was comprehensive and helpful. The fold out maps in the guide were handy.

This product was in excellent condition like new upon arrival. The fold out maps are a nice feature but a little clumsy and not waterproof. Most of the info in this guide is very basic stuff. If you are looking for trail maps this is not the guide to purchase.
