More About the Author

Laura Numeroff grew up in Brooklyn, with her mother, father and two older sisters. Her house was filled with books, art, music and folk dancing.

She attended Pratt Institute and graduated with a degree in communications and a contract for her first children's book, AMY FOR SHORT, published in 1975 by Macmillan.

A New York Times best-selling children's book author, Laura is best known for the series based on her book IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE. First printed in 1985, "Mouse" is in its 40th printing. The fourth book in the series, IF YOU TAKE A MOUSE TO THE MOVIES was on the New York Times Children's Best Seller list for five months- nine weeks at number one.

Publisher's Weekly listed IF YOU TAKE A MOUSE TO THE MOVIES as the number two book for children in 2000 (Harry Potter was number one) and at one point, Laura had three books on the New York Times Bestseller List in the same week.

In 2000, IF YOU GIVE A PIG A PANCAKE was featured on the Oprah show three times, and was recommended by Oprah's first kids' book club, as well as being noted as Oprah's favorite children's book of the year on her Christmas show. "PIG" was also on Publisher's Weekly Bestseller List for over a year. In addition, the series has sold over 4.5 million copies, been printed in fourteen languages, and won the prestigious Quill Award in the picture book category.

Some of Laura's other books currently in print are: WHAT MOMMIES DO BEST/WHAT DADDIES DO BEST, DOGS DON'T WEAR GLASSES, THE CHICKEN SISTERS, WHY A DISGUISE? The first two books in Laura's JELLYBEANS book series made the New York Times Best Seller List.

Hillary Clinton, President Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush have all read Laura's books to kids. First Lady Michelle Obama, her mother, her daughters, Malia and Sasha read Laura's book at the 2010 Easter Egg Roll on the White House Lawn. Laura was one of ten children's authors invited to a literacy day in Washington during the Bush administration in 2001. She has also visited over 100 elementary schools and has been a speaker at teacher conferences around the country.

Laura donates book sales to FIRST BOOK, a non-profit organization that provides brand new books to children who otherwise would not have access to them. She has also donated all royalties from THE HOPE TREE- KIDS TALK OUT ABOUT BREAST CANCER, to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Laura has appeared on The Today show twice as well as Good Morning America. On her December 13th, 2000 appearance on The Today Show, Laura donated 500 Mouse mini-books with doll ornaments to the show's toy drive.

My 4 year old daughter loves this series. In this book are four of the titles (If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, If You Give A Pig A Pancake, If You Give A Moose A Muffin and If You Take A Mouse To SChool)plus songs, activities and recipes to accompany each story. The CD reads through all of the stories and sings the songs. The stories are easy to follow along and the illustrations are wonderful. They start with the title of the book and progress from there. For example, If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk and so on. The stories are engaging and my daughter's reading skills are progressing rapidly. I have fun changing the stories up. I'll say the mouse will ask for a glass of water and my daughter will correct me. They are great for early reading skills and memory. If You Give A Pig A Party is her other favorite after mouse cookie which we purchased separately. This is the one my daughter usually asks for before bed. She'll snuggle up with the book, we put the CD on and it winds her down. The Cd lasts approximately 30 minutes. Ihighly reccomend this series for beginning readers.

Having already read and bought most of the If You Give a Mouse series I wasn't too keen to aquire the latest compilation until I heard the cd. I absolutely love the 3rd (I believe) track in which the children have a chance to test their listening skills. My 5 1/2 year old daughter loves the Piggy Polka and really enjoys paging thru the book with the cd. It reminds me of when I was kid paging thru the Jungle Book while listening enraptured to the record. Each reading and song is beautifully rendered. As a storyteller, I will be using this soon for storytime as the cd is a wonderful enhancement for some of the Laura Joffe Numeroff's best tales with those lovely, endearing illustrations.

My son won this book from our local library--he was so excited. All his favorite books in one place! And the songs on the CD are fun and catchy.(albeit slightly annoying for me). He had enjoyed it less than two months when it started to fall apart. The binding on this book (224 pages) is completely inadequate. It is not stitched together, it is "perfect bound" an (oxy-moron if there ever was one) where each page is individually glued into the adhesive. Our book is now in complete pieces--but my son can't bear to throw it away, and I am reluctant to replace it only to have another one fall apart. I recommend looking for a better binding, if available, or buying the books separately.

I came across this book while looking for a gift for my neice. I've heard the "Give a mouse..." saying a thousand times, but had never read the book. What a treat.

I didn't get to check out the CD, but the book alone is worth the price. The recipies and activities are simple and would be something fun to do with your kid.

This is a book you can enjoy reading to them as much as they enjoy hearing it -- the illustrations are cute and have lots of hidden details to notice.

My 2 year old daughter loves this book, so do her parents! The stories are fun and the illustrations are superior. The CD has all 4 stories and several nice songs, some of them quite funny. My daughter loves to have us read the book to her and even tries to "read" it herself.

The quality of the book itself is very good, nice price and sturdy. I am sure our family will enjoy it for several more years.

Like the other 2 star reviewers for this book our copy has completely fallen apart as well. My daughter loves this book and is so sad that it's completely in pieces. I really loved this book for the songs, recipes and the CD to listen to it in the car but there has got to be a better way to bind it. We have plenty of other books that don't have this problem. If they would fix the binding I'd buy a replacement copy in a heartbeat. Otherwise, I guess I'll just buy each book individually. Bummer!

**UPDATE: 8/26/2011**
I ended up buying another copy of this same book because it was so much more to buy each story individually. Thankfully, this copy has lasted us much longer. I have noticed maybe one page is starting to look lose so I may tape it before it falls out completely but this copy seems to be in better shape than our last one. The binding seems to be the same but maybe I just had a dud before or something. I'm glad we decided to get another copy.

My children love these little books, and I have no complaints with the wonderful stories or illustrations. The quality of the book itself, however, is terrible. My nephew has had 2 copies and we have had 1 copy and all of them have completely fallen apart, despite rather infrequent, careful use. The pages simply do not stay inside the binding, resulting in lost sections, misordered pages, and much bedtime drama.
