Book Description

September 1998 4 and upP and upEd Mouse Finds Out about
During a day of kite-flying with his friends, Ed Mouse encounters many examples of opposites, including T-shirts that are tight and baggy, bags that are empty and full, and cold water and hot sunlight. At various points in the text the reader is asked to answer questions based on the illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-These four books are poorly conceived and poorly executed. The plots are trite, featuring a cutesy mouse, Ed, and his friends and relatives. Many variations of each concept are introduced but they're much too difficult for most young children to understand and the explanations are vague and unclear. All require far more knowledge or insight than this audience will have. Each two-page spread has a small amount of text pertaining to the concept and a speech balloon that lists questions supposedly to encourage observation skills and understanding of the concepts presented. The garishly colored illustrations are often no help in answering the questions. Any of Tana Hoban's photo-essays paired with plenty of discussion and activities would be far better teaching resources than these titles.
