3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not Great
I've read all six books in the series so far. In Mouse, ShaoSu becomes a servant of Tonglong (a bad guy), then meets one of Hok's brothers (Long, a good guy). Hok is the main character from the book Crane. Mouse is not the best of the series (I thought Crane was the best, followed by Tiger and Snake). I thought Mouse had less action than some of the others.

This review is from: Mouse (The Five Ancestors, Book 6) (Hardcover)
My wife and I collect children's book and we stumbled upon this series with the very first book of the series, Tiger, and we immediately were captured by the story, action and issues. The series progresses taking a new character viewpoint of a centrally unfolding story. This is a great series of books especially for parents who are trying to find books to interest their sons, although there are strong female characters as well so your daughters should like it too.

Mouse is the newest book in the series and it's advances the story well from a very different viewpoint. Each of the books has several subtle lessons to teach, and the author does so without being preachy or pedantic. Buy this book and get the rest of the series. You won't be disappointed.

My 14 year old son had a hard time finding ANY books to hold his interest. He loved this whole series. He actually looked forward to reading each one. A big thank you to the author for writing something that my son could actually get into. It may be written for children below his reading level but at least he is reading by choice and not because he is being forced to.

A Kid's Review

I love this series, first off. This book is no exception. It's got all the action, and features Hok and Ying's new friend, Shaosu. O.K., he can't fight. But he can sneak around, and makes the reader think. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best series, December 27, 2011

This series of books is great for anyone interested in martial arts. My 8 year old son and his friend read the entire series over the summer. They couldn't put them down. In each book you meet the title character and take the journey with them as they flee their temple during an attack. In each book they start to find each other and end up avenging a death. The characters all have their own fighting style that is described throughout the books. My son loved them so much we bought him the entire series for Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice change from current science fiction series for kids, September 26, 2011

This review is from: Mouse (The Five Ancestors, Book 6) (Hardcover)
My kids read the whole series at least 5 times. Lots of ation, and well written. It is a nice change from science fiction series that are so popular for kids these days. A nice touch of orientalism to make the books more exotic. Those who liked kung fu Panda will enjoy finding this kind of philosophy in those books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enter the Five Ancestors, February 8, 2010

This review is from: Mouse (The Five Ancestors, Book 6) (Hardcover)
My son, a martial arts instructor, first introduced me to this series. We both practice kung fu, but being a Martial Arts Momma (MAM) made me somewhat skeptical about reading a YA novel that dealt with a subject I was more than familiar with. After all, what right did I have reading a YA novel, when I should be reading and reviewing a more properly adult angst-driven novel, like "The Prince of Tides"?!

However, upon the first read, my guilt and bias were put to rest. The plot simply unrolls through the eyes of the Five Ancestors, children who are Shaolin-trained martial artists, each gifted with the attributes of the animal form they studied and choose to represent their individual style of combat. Book 6, Mouse, is probably the most puzzling story of the series, in that Mouse has no direct relation (as far as I know!) to the rest of the Ancestors. Yet, they are his friends, and he decides to use his unique skill to obtain information in order for them all to avoid disaster. To do so, though, he must encounter and match wits with a despotic Emperor, power-hungry military generals, a snake of a mother (literally!), and ruthless pirates and warlords, all without the benefit of cell phones, text messaging, GPS, and dish satellite. How refreshing!

Amidst a plot that becomes increasingly chaotic, Mouse asks himself questions that also trouble us as adults today: Who, and where are my parents? Am I totally alone in the world? Do I have any brothers and sisters? If I do, how can I find them? Who can I trust?

You'll have to read the previous books first if you want to find any of the answers to the questions above. Be ready, though - after Book 6, Mouse, there's MORE!
