Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–In this straightforward story, told in simple declarative statements, readers learn about the flora and fauna that live in a meadow, starting with a mouse. The unsuspecting rodent, while eating a nutlet, starts a chain of events that ultimately leads readers back to him. He sends a leafhopper into a patch of grass with a snake that startles a moth. Various predators, some of whom are successful in finding something to eat, appear and move on until a hungry weasel materializes; as it turns out, it has been watching the mouse the entire time. The illustrations transcend the boxed-in area designed for the pictures and give the impression that they are popping out of the page. The moth leaves the picture and flies off to the side of the page. Then it's on to the next page where it gets caught in the spider's web. Once readers come full circle back to the mouse, they have been introduced to mammals, insects, a spider, an amphibian, a reptile, birds, and plants. Not an essential purchase but an informative and realistic look at a dynamic ecosystem.–Bethany L. W. Hankinson, Miller Elementary School, Newark, OH

From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. A typical North American meadow is home to a wide variety of creatures, from a mouse to a snake to a spittlebug. This close-up view allows young children a chance to take a long, careful look at some of the insects, mammals, spiders, and reptiles living in a meadow habitat. Spreads focus on a spider as she repairs her web, a moth startled by a snake on the hunt, and other fascinating animal encounters. The sparse text provides just enough basic information in its play-by-play of meadow activity, which is depicted in softly colored, detailed drawings, including an occasional, whimsical intrusion of an artist's hand drawing the scene. Closing pages provide a field guide with individual drawings of insects, birds, mammals, and flowers, which children are encouraged to find in the preceding pages. Book and Web resources append this useful addition to elementary science units. Karen Hutt

5.0 out of 5 stars A picturebook that gives young readers a realistic look at what goes on in a meadow daily, September 12, 2005
This review is from: Mouse in a Meadow (Paperback)
Informatively written in a simple, accessible, "kid friendly" text, and with detailed nature illustrations, Mouse In A Meadow by John Himmelman is a picturebook that gives young readers a realistic look at what goes on in a meadow daily. Showing a mouse, a weasel, birds, insects, and plants, and even an artist (only the hands of the artist are seen) capturing events on paper, Mouse In A Meadow is unafraid to show predators hunting their daily meals, whether it's spiders or birds trying to catch an insect or a weasel searching for the mouse in a meadow. The back of the book includes pictures of individual animals, insects, and plants for young readers to spot amid the pages of the story, and the final page offers some general information as to how meadows were created and offers reference books from which curious younger and older readers can learn more. An excellent book to stimulate young minds into thinking more about the natural world.
