Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2—When readers meet Mouse, he is furious. First he is "hopping mad," but expert Hare informs him that he is not hopping properly and shows him the correct moves. On the animated spreads that follow, Bear, Bobcat, and Hedgehog demonstrate how to be "stomping," "screaming," and "rolling-around-on-the ground" mad. However, each time Mouse tries to imitate them, he finds himself sprawled in a mud puddle. It is not until he is "standing-still mad" and none of the others can best his motionless stance that he begins to feel better. Through playful language and expressive watercolors with colored pencil and ink, this story about anger management proves to be both entertaining and therapeutic. Just like the heroine in Molly Bang's When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry… (Scholastic, 1999), Mouse finds his own way through his ire and, in the process, may help a few youngsters get a handle on their own.—Rachel G. Payne, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

Review

"Urban unfurls the gentle ‘be true to yourself’ moral perfectly, with plenty of funny dialogue, overplayed reaction and the enduring appeal of the tiny hero. Cole’s terrific watercolors reflect Mouse’s emotional growth in spreads and spots brimming with movement. Who knew standing still could be so dramatic? Well-pitched for preschoolers just learning social skills, this would be equally excellent for family reading, classrooms and storytimes."--Kirkus Reviews, STARRED review

This is a great little tale about how we express our feelings in different ways (Bear stomps his foot, Bobcat screams, etc. - but what does Mouse do?).

While, if I'm being *totally* picky I could say that I wanted a little better resolution at the end, but the story is still great and the adorableness completely makes up for it!

The moral I got from the story? That we all have different ways to express our emotions, and that one way is not better than another, we just need to find the one that's right for us. And this was certainly a fun way to "learn" that lesson! :)

Mouse is really, really, mad, but has a hard time expressing his feelings. His friends Hare, Bear, Hedgehog, and Bobcat try to help, but their methods don't work well for Mouse. In the end he figures out his own way to manage his anger. This is a great read-aloud for preschoolers, and the comical illustrations by Henry Cole really add to the narrative.

Bought this book for my almost two year old. He loves it! The pictures are wonderful and keeps his interest. The story ends with mouse deciding to hop into a bath full of bubbles - a favorite of my son. It's perfect to read before bed time. The humor in the book is entertaining for parents as well -- I imagine we will read for many years to come.

What would we do without this book? I have no idea. I checked this out from the library, had it for 5 days, and ordered it off Amazon. This is a wonderful book for toddlers and preschoolers about dealing with angry feelings. It's humorous and it really, really helps! We read this with different funny voices to make it fun for my daughter (not preachy sounding like other books for dealing with feelings) and she is able to learn from the story without realizing it.

My daughter is the sweetest darling in the world, but when she is mad, she is REALLY mad. She has a volatile temper and when she gets upset, she really flips. She becomes an entirely different person and hits and bites and has huge tantrums. We are working with her on dealing with her emotions in a positive way and this book has helped us tremendously. After only reading it one time, she understood the message.

Mouse is mad, and his friends all have different ways of dealing with their angry feelings. Mouse tries them all but nothing works for him. Finally he figures out his own way of dealing with his feelings, which is standing as still as he can and taking deep breaths. Not screaming, stomping, rolling on the floor, etc. After standing still a while (and receiving praise from his friends on his concentration) he realizes he isn't mad anymore.

Now when my daughter starts getting upset we ask, "What does Mouse do?" and she takes a breath and is very still. It really helps her to calm down and give herself a minute to think. If she's freaking out we can ask, "Does Mouse do that?" and she'll shake her head 'no' and then start making herself calm down. A lot of times we breathe and be still with her to help her focus. She is learning and getting better and better each time.

Mouse is very angry! He is having a serious temper tantrum. As he is having this fit several of his animals friends pass by. His friends try to tell him that he is expressing his anger in the wrong way and they each give him ideas on how to do it better. He finally just tries to be still and quiet and finds that this is the best anger management technique for him. This book would be prefect to open discussions on how to handle anger.

I have been looking for books to help my daughter (age 3) learn about coping with anger. I got lucky when i bought this one...she LOVES this book! She had it memorized in 2 days, and wanted to take it to preschool to read at story time today. It is fun for kids and has a great message. The illustrations are also really cute... "Mom make sure you show me the pictures, because it has good pictures."
