PreSchool-1?As Mouse and his mother head home on Halloween, Mouse sees one monster after another in place of his various animal friends and familiar surroundings. Later that evening, these same creatures come to his house for candy and he's not afraid of them anymore. It's unclear whether these monsters are costumes or figments of Mouse's imagination; at any rate, the monsters and animals bear no resemblance to one another, even in shape. The illustrations are colorful, detailed, and sweet, in a kind of romantic woodland style. The writing is patronizing ("Mouse cut out lots of shapes from paper for Mommy to string across the room. Can you guess what they were?") For a good story containing mistaken identity, try Ellen Raskin's Spectacles (Aladdin, 1988); for a Halloween story about someone who overcomes his fear, stick with Charlotte Zolotow's A Tiger Called Thomas (Lothrop, 1988).?Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME
