Amazon.com Review

One spooky night
when the moon was bright,
Mouse crept around,
and this is what he found....

"Flit! Flit! Flit!" Something flying. "Rustle! Rustle! Rustle!" Something moving. "Creep! Creep! Creep!" Something sneaking. What can all these things be? Mouse finds out that first impressions can be misleading as, one by one, his fears are assuaged by the appearance of some not-so-scary things: swooping, smiling bats; pretty, tumbling leaves; and scampering kittens. Rich, autumnal colors, full of giant shadows and adorable critters, and rhythmic, repetitive, reassuring text by the creators of Mouse's First Christmas, add up to a gentle Halloween tale ideal for the very youngest trick-or-treater. With just the right balance of creepiness and lighthearted fun, Mouse's First Halloween is ideal for children who are not quite ready for the horrors and gore of some of the more bloodthirsty Halloween stories. Buket Erdogan's endearing illustrations are sure to put anyone in the right mood for the spookiest night of the year. From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Inquisitive Mouse steps out again on a holiday eve. This time it's Halloween night. He hears something flying. "Flit! Flit! Flit! What could it be?" The bright, autumn-hued double-spread answers the question with shadows of bats and just enough black wings to suggest them, thus creating a guessing game for young children. Leaves rustle and tumble, scarecrows flap and wave, apples plop, and trick-or-treaters thump. At each eerie encounter, Mouse asks, "What could it be?" and a visual clue is incorporated into the spread. The answers are printed in shaped text on the following page with a refrain, "That's all. Not so scary after all." The brilliant Halloween tones and sounds of autumn create a chance for spooky language interaction and encourage participation. This author and illustrator make a superb team, and children who liked Mouse's First Christmas (S & S, 1999) will adore Mouse's First Halloween.

This is a perfect book for children just learning about Halloween. Children do like to see that scary things can turn out all right. The mouse in this story is adorable and the perfect character for children to relate to at Halloween.

This story would be great to read aloud to preschoolers. It has good "sound effects", and the illustrations depict nighttime without being scary. The little mouse hears and sees different things and is at first scared, but then realizes that there is nothing to be frightened of. Children will also have fun guessing what is going to appear on the next page based on the sounds and shadows shown.

The pictures and the words in MOUSES FIRST HALLOWEEN are so cute! The author writes about a mouse who hears a sound on one page and gets scared. Then, when you turn the page you find out what the sound was and that it was nothing to be afraid of. This would be perfect for a K-1 class lesson on making predictions. The students would have so much fun trying to guess what it was that mouse heard. The kids will love the illustrations in the book and will have a great time reading it after it has been read to the class!

Buket Erdogan's illustrations are perfect for this story. She paints in acrylics, therefore the colors are bold and intense, yet the mood is somewhat ominous. The book is set outdoors at night, so it supposed to be dark. The illustrations may be too gloomy for say a 1-year old, but my son was three when I picked up this book, and he was delighted with the Mouse story. This book taught my kid that bats aren't scary, and neither are jack-o-lanterns. I'm not particularly fond of rodents, but Mouse can come and visit anytime. Perfect first Halloween book.

My son, age 4, and I first picked out this book at our local library and it became an immediate favorite. The illustrations are adorable and the rhythmic verse is delightful. After reading aloud to my son over the course of several nights he memorized it! Now I am purchasing the book because he does not want to return his copy to the library. Now, my son gets great pleasure reading to his mommy and daddy. I must say we are brimming with pride ourselves. I even told my son's teacher- "let him read the story to you!"

I love this little book! My daughter and I read this at the library, and she was entranced, and it's nowhere near Halloween.

Each time the mouse gets frightened by a noise or a shadow or some other Halloween-related thing, there's a cute little (literally, written little) "Eek, mouse squeaked!" But the book goes through how each Halloween item, in and of itself isn't scary afterall (bats, jack-o-lanterns, scarecrows and more).

The final though is that it's fun to be "scared" on Halloween. I've seen child after child weighing the fun aspects of Halloween against the scary, and this book is a great way to help them come down on the side of fun. And even when it's not Halloween, each item offers a cute guessing game trying to figure out what the item is that my little 2-year old loved!

Highly recommended.

My 2-1/2 year old loves this book! Even though the recommended age is 4-8, this book is perfect for younger toddlers. The story is simple and short, perfect for toddlers, and the pictures are cute too. The mouse hears different noises on Halloween night and finds out that nothing is scary. I plan to get all the Mouse's First.. books.
