Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–Tomorrow is Halloween and Mouse is having a party. He puts on his costume and goes to invite his friends. Both Hedgehog and Bunny agree to attend, but Pig begins to cry because she had planned to have a party and invite the same friends. As the sad little mouse sits on his swing, he comes up with a brilliant idea: he and Pig can combine their efforts and have their party in the park. The story concludes with a wordless spread showing the animals enjoying their Halloween celebration. Spowart's soft, full-page illustrations set against lots of white space reflect all of the animals' emotions and offer a gentle approach to the holiday.–Linda Staskus, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH

From Booklist

PreS. Mouse is excited. Halloween is on the way, and his mother has made cupcakes for a party. He invites all his friends, ending with Pig, who promptly bursts into tears. She wanted to have her own party, complete with presents she made and cookies her mother baked. Mouse feels bad until he gets an idea: a joint party with cupcakes and cookies for all. This story is old-fashioned in the best sense. Told at a good pace, it showcases a problem that children will easily relate to, and it will evoke empathy for both Pig and Mouse. It's also nice that Mouse solves the problem himself, even though in real-life it would probably be Mom who comes up with the solution. The pictures, which focus mostly on the characters (there's very little background), are executed in the colors of autumn fruits and vegetables--pumpkin, grape, spinach. Their warmth mirrors that of the story. This is a great holiday title, but it can be read anytime and still gently make its point. Ilene Cooper
