A disillusioned young girl looking to carve her own path in life and live on her own terms hits the road with a volatile collection of radical revolutionaries in director Alison Murray's uncompromising coming-of-age road film. Sherry (Ellen Page) is a teenage contradiction of sorts; she wants to be accepted but she doesn't want to sacrifice her fierce individualism. When Sherry meets up with SPARKS (Street People Armed with Radical Knowledge) and decides to join the curious group of counter-culture activists in their trek across Europe, it appears as if the idealistic young traveler has finally found a family who will accept her for who she really is. When the SPARKS group arrives in an abandoned Portuguese vineyard to set up their own private Shangri-la, though, their ultimate goal grows increasingly ominous as the heated rhetoric of group leader Harry begins to take a dangerous slant. When a pair of deaths prompt the more weak-minded members of the group to pledge unwavering support, skeptical Sherry and questioning fellow SPARKS member Mad Ax begin to see the group for what it really is - a cleverly disguised recruitment tool designed specifically to promote dangerous leader Harry's warped ideology.

I'm not one to pay much attention to movie reviews because everyone is so different. I, personally, really liked the movie. I didn't think it was a mess. I thought the kids lives were a mess but I thought the movie was made very well. It isn't supposed to look like a hollywood glam movie, because its not a hollywood glam story. I thought the lighting/sound/etc...all matched the story it was trying to tell. The movie made me angry, sad, interested, scared, and relieved. It vaguely reminded me of SLC Punk, or Brokedown Palace, or stories along that line. However I wouldn't compare it to them. It is it's own story. It shows you things you don't want to see, it makes you feel emotions you don't want to feel. I would recommend it.

This film from writer/director Alison Murray is a depressing and altogether predictable morality tale chronicling the attractions and dangers of cult communes for modern youth (together with a warning for parents against seeking to become too involved in the lives of teenage offspring!). Sadly, however, the film's treatment of an underlying serious topic is every bit as shallow as it is unpleasant. While this production contains some stunning cinematography in places, this is frequently undermined by an over reliance on post-production digital colour treatments that render the image harsh and grainy (I think they were aiming for 'stark and gritty') in a generally unreal and inconsistent manner. And although it does feature a few genuinely moving scenes, it also contains some that are just downright silly, with acting that is mostly wooden and unconvincing (Ellen Page providing a notable exception). Add to this to a screenplay that is quite frankly a mess and in serious need of good, hard editing, plus a storyline that seems to just have no idea what it wants to do with its life, and the result is a production that is about as much in need of rehabilitation as some of the characters it portrays.

There are times when the only redeeming feature of this film is its soundtrack which, ironically, often has more to say than the screenplay; it is largely this, plus Ellen Page's conviction, that made me stay with it to the end and which adds the third star to this review. I did get one laugh out of this film, though: the commune leader's tag line throughout is "Intellectual self-defense, without the bull----". Oh yeah, right!

This DVD edition contains almost nothing by way of bonus materials, just theatrical trailer, plus short (and pointless, uninformative) "Behind the Scenes" featurette. This strikes me as an opportunity lost, because if ever there was a film that cried out for some additional commentary from its creator, this must surely be it. Oh, well.

This movie certainly has its flaws but it is an interesting one. People looking for a film with Hollywood-like glamour need not bother because the comparisons are unfair. The lighting and camera work are sketchy and needed improvement but the themes and ideas and Ellen Page's performance as well as the rest of the cast make it worthwhile in my opinion. Especially if you are a fan of Page's work. I especially liked Maxwell McCabe-Lokos's performance as Mad Ax.

I won't bother with summarising it here as you can find that elsewhere. The dance sequences, while interesting and bringing spontaneity to a film that would otherwise be completely grim but go on a little too long and the story does seem to meander on the middle of the film. it starts off with a brisk pace from the beginning but the brisk storytelling seems to lapse a little later. The film while not wrapping things up in a big pretty bow does give the viewer a little hope at the end. length was perfect. Not one of the best films I've seen but it is an interesting one and I'm glad I saw it.
