5.0 out of 5 stars A funny book you will enjoy time and time again!
Fred Newman has written the best book and maybe the only book about how to make unusual sounds with your mouth. He's an expert at this, having done sound for many movies, TV shows, etc. But more than just a demonstration of these sounds, he actually teaches you how to make them yourself! This is more fun than you might think. It's all done in a wonderfully amusing style...

1.0 out of 5 stars You're too dreamy
Most people will never figure out these sounds, they are near impossible.

He is most excellent and talented, but this stuff is very difficult!

He's an expert at this, having done sound for many movies, TV shows, etc. But more than just a demonstration of these sounds, he actually teaches you how to make them yourself! This is more fun than you might think. It's all done in a wonderfully amusing style with plenty of photos. There is also a CD included so you can hear examples. We had a copy of this book on the table at a party. Some of the guests got a hold of it and spent a good hour trying out the various techniques, laughing all the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars 20 years later and I still use tips from this book, June 4, 2005

I first bought Mouthsounds in the early 1980s. Now, more than 20 years later, I still regularly employ the Taxi Whistle, stomach growl and barking dog for hailing cabs (it really works) and entertaining the under-5 set. At that time, the book contained a vinyl record, so the CD is a necessary update. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Strange but delightful sounds from my 11-year-old son's room, August 14, 2005
This review is from: MouthSounds: How to whistle, Pop, Boing and honk for all occasions... and then some. (Paperback)
My 11-year-old son has been threatening to run away to the Fred Newman School Audio Realism for years now. He's a big fan, plain and simple. Saturday evenings our house stops so my son can listen to APHC, and laugh with, practice with, get ideas from the Noise Master himself. This book and accompanying CD have provided my son with hours and hours of entertainment, and noise training. Who knew an 11-year-old boy could ADD to the sounds he uses to fill a home? Fred Newman knew. Great book, great CD, both genuinely teach the fine art of boinging and popping....and trust me, these sounds lead to thousands of others. Thanks Fred! Thanks Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars pure, joyful genius, April 20, 2005

the only sound he doesn't have to put in the book is the one your own nose makes when that slimey stuff pops out of it because you're laughing too hard.

do yourself a favor: buy 12 and give them to all the crabby pants you know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs this!, July 26, 2005
This review is from: MouthSounds: How to whistle, Pop, Boing and honk for all occasions... and then some. (Paperback)
I bought one for my godson, and when it came, I tried out some of the noises. The directions are easy to follow, and the extra commentary in the book is hilarious. I was able to make the noises right away, and they were so funny I kept making myself laugh! I ordered another one right away for another kid. What an awesome gift!

This is a fun book. Listening to the CD in the car was also fun and easier for me to make a funny sound. It makes you realize how many mouthsounds you can already do--you just need a context to make it special. The author will tell you that making various mouth sounds is like aerobics for your voice--so you don't end up with an old lady or old man voice when you get to your 70's or 80's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Job, March 18, 2007
This review is from: MouthSounds: How to whistle, Pop, Boing and honk for all occasions... and then some. (Paperback)
Being amazed for a long time by the ability some people show of imitating sounds and voices, and after not having found any websites that offers any ideas on how to imitate sounds, voices and to produce mouth sounds, i came to know Mr. Newman's fantastic work through a pdf document in which he is interviewed, and i decided to buy the book and the truth is that i found it very helpful and full of surprises, for example i didn't know that to bark like a dog you have to inhale, and that the duck quack comes from the cheek! The book is very educating in the sense that it not only gives a nice introduction about how sounds are generated, but also gives detailed step-by-step instructions on how to produce specific sounds.
i think that with practice and fine tuning anybody can learn something interesting and fun from this book.i do recommend it for sound lovers.

We bought this book for our child who, at 7 years old, doesn't realize that she can beatbox with the best of them... For some crazy reason, she loves and has a talent for making mouthsounds and doing imitations.

This is a really fun book. None of us (child, mother, father) can put it down. It's provided hours of entertainment and laughter.

This book is simple, harmless, good clean fun. What more could you ask for? Even if you aren't a beatboxing whiz -- this book is just plain fun for anyone!

Oh, and one more thing -- our child loves to use it with the babysitter. It's just great for anyone, anytime!
