Classic Cars!!,
This review is from: Move Like This (Audio CD)
"Move Like This" is the Cars first album since 1987, and while it's been much too long since their last release, it was worth the wait! Aside from bassist Benjamin Orr, who passed away in 2000, all of the original members are back and they sound like they haven't missed a beat. The album's first track, "Blue Tip," is vintage Cars with Atari-era keyboards, a super catchy chorus laced with perky beats, and Ric Ocasek's trademark vocals. "Too Late" is a little more downbeat, a synth-driven tune with an electro pop foundation. Elliott Easton's guitar makes its presence known on "Keep On Knocking" and he turns in a very hip psychedelic solo. "Soon" is a ballad in the tradition of Drive, the hit that Orr sang back in 1984. "Sad Song" features a clever palm-muted guitar and on-the-upbeat handclaps. "Hits Me" and "Free" are a total recall of the new wave/pop sound the CARS had in the 1980's and captures their precise swagger perfectly. "Keep On Rocking" is more vintage Cars and has an incredible groove. While the band isn't breaking any new musical ground with their latest release, this is a finely produced album that fans of their earlier work will love, and is highly recommended!

Climb aboard this DeLorean time machine...,

Goose bumps all over as I take a magical ride back in time to my youth. There is no substitute for the original Cars. This album is "new-vintage", and aged to perfection! A musical treat for the ears and a warm memory morsel for the heart. Do you ever wish you could do it all over again?! Well, this album lets us all "Take Another Look"! Thanks for the fond trip back to the future! A MUST addition for your Cars collection.
05/19/2011 Update: "Move Like This" debuts at NUMBER 2 on the Billboard Rock Album Charts! Congratulations to the band and thanks to all the loyal fans that made this release a success! This century wants more Cars music! This century NEEDS more Cars music!

Head out on the highway...looking for The Cars!,
This review is from: Move Like This (Audio CD)
Just want to put my two cents worth in and tell the public that The Cars new album is really worth the cost! I bought mine at Best Buy today at $9.99 plus tax and it also included three bonus demo songs called One By One, Hits Me and Rocket USA. Also included are two music videos and they are Sad Song and Blue Tip. There is also a plastic Commemorative Pass telling the dates they play for the 2011 year and their web site! So all in all, a pretty good deal! The songs are a continuation of Heartbeat City and a little of The Cars first album thrown in for good measure! Thanks for your reading time...I'm not steering you wrong! (Get it!)...lol

This is an excellent album, with only a few minor weak spots in my view (some insufferable lyrics mar "Soon", for instance). Ben Orr's absence means the album lacks his detached swagger, and as a result every song is dominated by Ocasek's trademark dark quirkiness. You can actually identify the songs that Orr should be singing. But it's a completely solid effort with a few fantastic tracks, and best of all: real drums.

The Cars Can Still Rev, Still Rock, Still Move Like This!,
This review is from: Move Like This (Audio CD)
Get your hands on The Cars' new album and take it out for a spin. Whether an old fan or new, you won't be disappointed. Let it be said that while you'll soon be basking in that electrified glow that only The Cars can generate and sustain, the songs here don't exactly copy their old songs, but rather simply veer into familiar styles and territory covered in them; each one is distinctively new and yet uniquely and undeniably The Cars.
The record starts off with a rocker called Blue Tip, the title referring to the tip of a billiards cue. Here we are treated to a tasty barrage of claps, warbling synth, catchy vocals, and a bona fide techno vibe. It's really quite good. Then comes a little bit down-tempo number called Too Late that has classic Cars rhythms and nice harmonies. Keep On Knocking is a surprise: a heavy-metal guitar slashes out a chugging rhythm as Ocasek sings in his jumpiest, quirkiest style, and Easton's guitar comes into a keyboard-like solo like old times about 2/3 through. Soon is a soft love song done in a style reminiscent of the late Ben Orr, and the vocals and arrangement even call up the ghost of Roy Orbison. The gentle, chiming melody builds to a nice crescendo and then fades smoothly. Sad Song is an awesome display of mastery: the claps, the humming, throbbing bass like on Candy-O, the infectious foot-tapping rhythms, the catchy vocals, the flashes of sinister synth Hawkes lays down about 1/2 way in, all make this perhaps the biggest surprise and the song most likely to grab you tightly at first listen. Next comes Free, and just as it says, "You could go back in time," it features some Bye, Bye, Love and You're All I've Got Tonight-style choppy rhythms and syncopations. The cool synth comes out on top 2/3 through and there is a nice drum build-up, and it all goes out rocking. Drag On Forever has an almost Foreigner-type lead-in for a classic Ocasek delivery. Then, a strident screaming guitar cuts through it all, and meanwhile there is a satisfying ambient growl behind everything; hinting at a restrained but unmistakable raw power, like the deceptively smooth thrum of an Olds Rocket 350 ready to burn some rubber down the line. Some incredible guitar and key work again goes riffing along like in their early hits, while the lyrics speak of pleading lust, frustration, angst, shame, disgust, and guilty pleasure. This is one that may require repeated listening to even begin to plumb. On Take Another Look, we are presented with another Orr-like vocal treatment and rhythm. The poignant, earnest lyrics seem bent on rekindling love, and shades of Heartbeat City resound throughout. It's Only impresses with more of those throbbing, humming, bucking bass lines and smooth vocals. Then Easton's positively wicked guitar comes slashing in. About 1/3 through, the strings, keys, and drums all hit their pounding stride as only these guys can do. A bit further in, some poppy keystrokes surface, a la Shake It Up, and as Ocasek croons, "Sometimes we just walk away from delirious skies," the chills and goosebumps are real enough to prove we have arrived, which is perfect, because the next and final song is Hits Me, and in this one, there is a tantalizing duel between both fluid and chiming guitars, and it features some truly inspired drumming by Robinson. Sweetly anguished vocals slide into a fantastic pulsing jamming bit of synth and guitar dueling, then Rick's vocals skate on top again, then they dance around, then they tease, and then they step back and let the guitars and keys shine, and as this trade goes on, you won't want it to end. Indeed, as Ocasek says, "Then it hits me -- I gotta just get through it, and I'll be fine...I gotta just get through these changing times..." you will be reaching to make the whole thing play again. And again, and again. The Cars are back, and it's high time to go for a drive with them again!

This disc is excellent!! The Cars have made a great comeback album and they also dedicated it to the late great Ben Orr.
The new disc has soundwriting styles similar to their first 4 albums with a modern enjoyable twist. Production is also excellent. Great job guys

Getting BETTER With Age!,

This review is from: Move Like This (MP3 Download)
I was skeptical as to what this album was going to be like since SO much time had passed since the band had made an album, and that last album wasn't too great. I was also skeptical as to what it would sound like with only Rick Ocasek doing the vocals and not hearing Benjamin Orr's voice. Yes, I do miss hearing Ben's voice at times, but I think Rick does a GREAT job with all the songs, both in the writing and the singing.
I find myself enjoying this album more and MORE with each listen. I believe it will become one of my "summertime" albums that I can listen to any time of the year and it will feel like summertime FUN! The slower songs weren't my favorites the first few listens, but they do grow on you and the lyrics fit perfectly. What I just REALLY LOVE about this album is that it is also a "rocker" in the new wave feel of their first three albums. There are songs that sound like they could easily fit on their debut, some on Candy-O, and some from Panorama. It's GREAT to hear Elliot Easton CRANK on his guitar like on those classic recordings of yesteryear. The whole band sound very tight, energetic and like they are having fun making music together again. I'm hoping that we won't have to wait quite as long for another GREAT album from these gents.

If you love The Cars from the 80's you will absolutely love this new CD. I don't know if you can wear CD's out, but this could be possible with this one. We have been playing it non-stop.

Classic Cars!!,
This review is from: Move Like This (Audio CD)
I wasn't sure what to think when I heard about a new Cars effort after 24 years. After the first listen, I liked it. After the second, even better. As the third listen morphed immediately into the fourth, I was sold! I've worn this CD out already. Thanks so much, Ric and the gang, but please don't wait another 24 years until the next release. I don't know if my senior living facility would look kindly on the volume level at which I would be playing it.

When I first listened to it, I did not like it. I found it a bit déjà-vu, bits of past tracks haunting this one. But then I decided to put them all together with all other old tracks from the band, listening to them randomly, and, what a surprise, all at once the full CD made sense to me as something new and, better, a step ahead, not just a collage of pieces of the past. Congratulations Mr Ocasaek, Ben and we fans deserve a tribute like this.
