4.0 out of 5 stars Nat Adderly After Cannonball, December 30, 2010
By
jazz lover since 1960 (Tampa, Fl. and Franklin, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: On the Move (Audio CD)
This 1983 recording is unique among all the recordings I review. 2 of the 4 artists are still alive and making music! Only the leader, Nat Adderly and bassist Walter Booker are deceased. Sonny Fortune, alto; Larry Willis, piano are living legends. Unfortunately, most of the recordings I review on Amazon are of deceased musicians.
This recording is one of 2 recorded live at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco in 1983. (See my review on Amazon of the other one: "Blue Autumn.")
Both recordings are similar. There are a few hard bop swinging numbers. The rest are varied compositions contributed by Larry Willis or Nat or Sonny, and include latin rhythms, and slow, comtemplative tunes.
I heard this group live in 1983 at a TV studio taping session in Tampa, Florida. What impressed me then and now is the strong, firm, aggresive alto playing of Sonny Fortune. He has created a unique style.
Since then, I have become enamored of the piano playing of Larry Willis. Fortunately, both are still with us, and playing magnificently.
Although this is hardly an essential recording, it is recommeded.
