Tracy Nelson's three CD releases (four counting "Sing It" with Marcia Ball and Irma Thomas) on Rounder have all been remarkable in different ways. Always an eclectic artist, she towed a bluesier line on the first two "comeback" releases ("In The Here and Now" and "I Feel So Good"), apparently at the label's request. With her third effort for Rounder, however, she breaks away from a strict blues setting, and sounds all the better for it. As great as the preceding two releases were, Nelson really cuts loose here. Beginning with "Livin' on Love," a rollicking duet with Delbert McClinton, she goes on to classic Bessie Smith ("Got Me Goin'") and her own "Playin' It Safe," recorded twice (it's repeated as a surprise bonus track at the end of the record) a gospel inspired number that is reminiscent of her early work with Mother Earth. Blues purists will likely balk at the pop feel of Dianne Davidson's "Tonight I'll Dream" and Tracy's own "Somebody Loves You," but no one could deny that these are gorgeous, heartfelt vocals that could have cracked AOR playlists and won Tracy the wider audience she deserves. Numbers like "You Never Broke My Heart" and the title track just plain cook. Tracy is in great voice and seems to be having a ball on this record. She shares vocal duties with Maria Muldaur, Phoebe Snow and Bonnie Raitt on Andy McMahon's song "Ladies Man," and it's a wonderful moment, one that anticpates "Sing It" in its female camaraderie. Still I have to admit,I rather prefer Tracy solo--she is just such a powerful singer, I find it impossible to focus on anyone else when I'm listening to her.

I wrote a review the frist time I listened to this, after being a Tracy Nelson fan for 30 yrs. I was disappointed in all the "boogie-woogie" arrangements and only gave it 3 stars. But, I've since listened more and fell in love with it. Tracy just can't make a bad record!

I love this cd. I came across it by accident and now listen to it regularly. The music is a soulful blend of blues with a bit of country. I highly recommend this cd.
