Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Davidson and Sweeney treat their topic, transportation in America, in terms of both its technical aspects and its cultural impact. The authors rely on three popularizing techniques. One method is their use of illustrative material depicting representative vehicles, jobs characteristic of the type of transportation, and travel ephemera along with literary odes to newfangled modes of transport. The second hook is explanations of how new systems altered localities: for example, Santa Cruz, California, was saved by the railroad. Third, they present stories highlighting the liberating influences of travel, such as a story about four women who drove Route 66 in 1947. Best of all, the authors familiarize readers with the drastic effects that transportation revolutions such as superhighways have on landscape and society. The crowd-pleasing authors hit on all cylinders in this companion book to a new exhibit at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Gilbert Taylor
