5.0 out of 5 stars just say no to haterade
this album rocks my socks. although i enjoyed "that's not what i heard," movement kicked twice as much ass. more mature, more moody, more funky. Among others, "don't make waves" is amazing.
I'm really surprised to see the other reviewer's comments. Give it a listen, make your own decision

3.0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent
As much as I love Beth Ditto's voice, I must concur with the detractors -- this is an inconsistent, incomplete album. This is a great album from a great band. southern rock meets upperwestcoast punk. if you liked the first album or thier EP you will probably like this one too. the best part is that this album seems to go on a little longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect to dance to..., July 23, 2003

whether in a group of their fans at a concert or all by your lonesome, it's perfect. i hate to dance and when i hear this band, i have to dance, i can't stop myself.

they are blues-punk-gospel and brilliant. i loved their other albums and was very excited when i heard of this one. and i was not in the least let down. beth sings so well it's staggering, brace plays guitar like no-one else, and kathi is a genius on the drums. this album is a little, and i do mean a little, more polished than the others but still has the punk sensibility as the others. there are very few bands that have albums that can function as a whole and as separate songs, but the gossip manages it brilliantly. and at the end listen for the "hidden" track after "light light sleep."

so go buy this now. it's worth every penny.

and also look out for their live cd coming out sometime in the fall on the dimmak label. they are one of the best, if not the best, live groups i have ever seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fans Decide for Yourselves, the Bad Reviews = Rubbish, September 8, 2006
This review is from: Movement (Audio CD)
I disagree with the person who criticized this "albulm" (ha) and agree with the person who called it blues, punk, gospel. The instrumentation is not sloppy, the guitar playing and the drumming have a raw, primal sound that sends people into a frenzy both in the comfort of their homes and at the Gossips' live shows. This record is my favorite of all of them. If you want Beth to get a backup band and sound like a pop star, forget it. Go buy a Christina Aguilera album.

4.0 out of 5 stars great album, great band, June 27, 2003

"Movement" totally rocks my socks off.
I bought this CD and was blown away by its simple, relentless energy.
Then I saw them the band live a few days later,
and I can honestly say that The Gossip is for real.
They rock with the same abandon as The Yeah Yeah Yeahs,
but Beth Ditto's soulful vocals give The Gossip's brand of rock a slightly different flavor.
Do yourself a favor and pick up this CD.

This record is quickly becoming my favorite. Brace's guitar, more raw than ever. Beth's voice is the kind that gets in your soul and stays there. And Kathy's beat pulls it all together.
No No No will make you dance, Light Light Sleep and Nite will get inside you Beth gives it to you for reals....and that's just three...do yourself a favor and get this record

4.0 out of 5 stars Southern Fried Garage Punk for your soul, May 27, 2003
This review is from: Movement (Audio CD)
In the revival of garage rockers like the White Stripes, the Hives, and the Strokes, it is unfortunate that the Gossip are often overlooked. This Oly via Arkansas trio have pounded out foot stomping blues flavored punk for several years now; and there newest release finally fufills the promise of their first gritty ep. The powerful lead vocals of Beth Ditto reach new heights as she moan, howls, and seduces the listner througout the album. Her voice's intesity is matched by rough swagger of Nathan's guitar work. Just listen to the opening track "Nite", rarely has the gutwrenching emptiness of a night alone been expressed so fully in so few words. Simply powerful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, September 23, 2005

As much as I love Beth Ditto's voice, I must concur with the detractors -- this is an inconsistent, incomplete album. It differs from 'That's Not What I Heard' in that there are actual "songs" here, as compared to the "skits" that defined the first album. Because of the clarity of the production and the longer songs, The Gossip's flaws are more obvious here; the lyrics are bad (and yes, embarrassing at times), and The Gossip are yet to learn any sense of dynamics. It's a relentlessly loud, jarring, almost assaulting affair; with Beth belting, and Brace and Kathy "hammering" their instruments. For this reason, I can understand those that say this album is boring compared to the first one. It lacks variety, and it seems like The Gossip didn't put much effort into the songs; they are simply coasting on Beth's amazing voice.

That said, there are some good songs here. 'Nite' has a sense of urgency and longing, showcasing Beth's gospel tones wonderfully. 'Jason's Basement' is the strongest of the bunch, as it's the fastest, most swaggering and energetic. 'No No No' and 'Don't Make Waves' are decent. 'Yesterday's News' is a startlingly honest moment about Beth's ex-girlfriend. Beth's ambivalence and vulnerability here are unprecedented. 'Fire/Sign' is great, once again showing off the band's soulful swagger. The only real bellyflop here is 'Dangerrr', where Beth milks her "baby", "honey" motifs repeatedly, which is one of The Gossip's biggest flaws -- rather than creating inventive verses, they simply write a few lines and then repeat them for the entire duration of the song. I'm not sure about 'Lesson Learned', though, a song about being different and relishing it, featuring the common lyric "I don't ever wanna be that girl, saddest thing in the whole wide world."

Beth is supremely talented, but you can't help but feel like her talents are wasted on this. The Gossip's punk manifesto is actually the very thing that's holding them back - the instrumentation is sloppy (though less so than on the debut album), the lyrics are poor, and the liner notes are littered with typos. If The Gossip concentrated on writing great songs and being accomplished musicians, rather than simply justifying their flaws in the name of punk rock, they could make a great album. With that said, both Gossip albums have their virtues and are worth checking out if only for Beth's rich, sexy voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scorchingly Good Bluesy Garage Rock for your Earholes, June 3, 2003

Toe-tapping, head-bopping, butt-shaking soulful rocking bluesy garage stuff to make your neighbors pound on the wall screaming, "Oh, jeeze, turn it down, will you?" You are supposed to play this CD loud, and after a few listens, you will find yourself wishing you too could belt out the blues like Beth (lead singer) can. If you think the Black Keys are the bees knees, try this as well. Imagine if Janis Joplin ran head long into a delta-blues band who clashed right into the Ramones, and you have The Gossip.
