Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Early childhood teachers interested in exploring dance and creative movement with their students may find a use for this title and its novel approach to learning. The authors explain in a clear and succinct manner the reasons for integrating movement in the classroom and provide a solid rationale and several instructional tips for their methods. Teachers will also discover how these movement activities benefit a child's development, as the authors discuss the relationship between movement and social, emotional, physical, and mental skills. After explaining their concepts and rationale, the authors provide 10 stories containing movement exercises that demonstrate those concepts. Children and their teachers then can perform the movements together while the teachers tell the story. The stories are simple, and incorporate the movements smoothly, realistically, and in a complementary fashion. The authors suggest conducting a half-hour movement lesson as a part of the classroom's daily structure, and include a sample lesson plan. A discography and bibliography contain source information, but not enough recent sources or information on ordering and availability. While these stories and activities may not be suited for a traditional story program, public libraries could consider this as an additional resource for their early childhood collections. School libraries will want to consult with early childhood staff to determine need.?Kevin Wayne Booe, Boise (ID) Public Library

More About the Author

Helen Landalf was born in San Diego, California, where she grew up with her two brothers, one of whom has autism. His beautiful artwork can be seen in her picture book THE SECRET NIGHT WORLD OF CATS, which he illustrated, and on the cover of MOVEMENT STORIES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN. When Helen was fifteen years old, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Although she recovered, it was an experience that made a dramatic impact on her life. Perhaps because her teen years were so difficult, she became inspired to write for Young Adults. Her debut YA novel, FLYAWAY, about a girl who struggles to deny her mom's addiction to meth, releases from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in Fall 2011. When she's not writing, Helen works as a certified Pilates instructor and teaches Creative Dance to preschoolers. She has authored / co-authored five books for teachers about integrating dance and drama into the preschool and elementary classroom. Helen resides in Seattle, Washington.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book to tap into the imagination of young children!, February 2, 1998

This review is from: Movement Stories for Young Children: Ages 3-6 (Young Actors Series) (Paperback)
A great book for introducing children to basic movement concepts using imagination and stories. The stories are well written, humorous, and allow children to become immersed in a world of playful and fun movements. Landalf and Gerke's introduction, about 16 pages, covers just about everything a good creative movement teacher needs to know about understanding how to teach movement concepts to young children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jump right in!, September 30, 2000
This review is from: Movement Stories for Young Children: Ages 3-6 (Young Actors Series) (Paperback)
This is a must have book for anyone who loves or works with children. Not only are the stories usable within an existing curriculum or creative dance class framework, the book enables all educators to use Ms. Landolf's sequencing to create a movement story of his or her own. I have been using this approach within my own creative movement class (Story in a Box) for two years with great success.

Thank you Helen!

Kim
