5.0 out of 5 stars The unique combination of instruments works. 4.5 stars, August 14, 2009
This review is from: Movements in Colour (Audio CD)
4.5 stars. I keep listening to this one: at home, in the car, sometimes even at work-- although it is far from just background music. For me, it mixes the ECM-style world-jazz of albums like Thimar or Madar with the lightness and swinging bounce style that you might hear from Sonny Rollins (on the track "Bing" for example). There is a good sense of balance and space, without it being too spacey. Some of the tunes wander a bit, so it falls short of 5 stars for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Movements In Monochrome - Music For A Cold Snap, December 19, 2009

What could be less desirable than multiplying the daily commute from home to work due to severe winter weather? It's sometimes not even clear whether you will make your destination in one piece. But there is a very enjoyable upside to even this most unpleasant and potentially stressful situation. And for me it is provided by the British saxophonist, Andy Sheppard. My suggestion is to turn up the heating in the car, reduce your speed to what seems like walking pace and listen to the warmth of the colours concocted by this very competent ensemble. Absolutely beautiful. For the best part of 1 hour, you can sail away from your troubled commute on this hypnotic magic carpet. The reality may be monochromatic snow and ice, but the music is as colourful and uplifting as can be. This is Andy Sheppard at his majestic best and my favourite recording of his since "Learning To Wave" (oh what a joy that recording is!). If you like saxophone and tabla, then this is for you. I just hope that ECM will be enable many others to learn about Andy Sheppard.

A special journey through GOOD quality music.

Some, kind of like John Surman vibe mixed with beautifully played saxophones and double bass. Then, add the tablas and spanish guitar. Superb.

I appreciate this musicians creations and I'm very happy to add them to my CD library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meandering music that wanders into tranquil but interesting places, August 9, 2010

When I first played "Movements in Colour" by Andy Sheppard, I was afraid it was going to head off into the more edgy, angular type of music found on many ECM recordings. Now that is not a knock on that type of music, but what I wanted here was something more fluid and warm: meandering music that wanders into tranquil but interesting places, revealing nuances and creative sparks without recycling tired jazz idioms.

This album fits the bill on all counts. It is not the future of jazz, a synthesis of past idioms, or some sort of wake up call. Thanks, Mr. Sheppard, I needed this music during some turbulent times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Notable disco de ECM, August 9, 2009
This review is from: Movements in Colour (Audio CD)

It was a beautiful piece of music with lots of world music, in synergy. I had never heard of Andy Shepherd but I will soon as he has a unique talent.
