COVER GIRL WAS NEVER LOVELIER.....IT JUST SOUNDED THAT WAY.,
By
This review is from: Cover Girl/ You Were Never Lovelier (Audio CD)
somebody really must want to see (and hear) the soundtrack of 'cover girl' out there on cd....for here it is again....back to back with the same 'cover girl' that shares that mesmorizing marquee with girl crazy, rhapsody in blue and the shocking miss pilgrim......and somebody forgot to put that cover girl's best foot, face and figuire forward by allowing us, the people who actually and joyfully buy these discs, to hear those raptuous melodies the way they were meant to be heard.....i mean, this score was a gift to us from mr. jerome kern himself and this is the way he's being honored.....with a soundtrack that has a poor sound and not such a great track record either. do they have a third version (meaning...in cd parlance...the same exact soundtrack paired with another movie to take your mind off the fact that it's no better this time around? when they released 'cover girl' on laserdisc some years ago (you remember laser discs...they were in all the papers....they just didn't make it to many of the retail stores) the first issue was neither lovely to look at or delightful to hear ...so they came out with the remastered version and we finally got to see and hear 'cover girl' the way it was meant to be...if she made it to the cover of that magazine she must've had something to qualify her for that prestigious position. maybe it just sounded better because we were able to look at it while we were listening to it. maybe rita hayworth took our minds off the fairly decent mono sound....rita could do that, you know...but i believe someday....well, maybe not immediately but in the not too distant future (same thing...means the same thing as 'someday'....or 'don't hold your breath' they'll stop hitting us with such brilliant explanations as 'well, it's an old movie...they all sounded bad in the forties.' don't listen to that. 'cover girl' is one of the most delightful movie musicals ever presented by the same motion picture company who once thought the life of al jolson would make a pretty good film....they also had the same thought about the life of eddy duchin....they had many such thoughts.....i'd hate to hear their thoughts today about the current crop of cds with the o.t.s. of 'cover girl' so that's why i only gave it four stars....you gotta give those people something to work for.

The only reason this CD got any stars at all is because the music itself is wonderful. It's no wonder Cover Girl won an Oscar for musical score, it's upbeat sunny and perfect. Songs such as "I'm Old Fashioned" and "Long Ago and far Away" are timeless love songs. However, the quality of this CD is poor at best. From what I could tell the recording is done in mono. When I first put the CD on and queued up the first track I thought somehow my CD player had been transformed into a Victrola. The sound was scratchy, hissy and tinny. If the producers of this video were looking to capture authentic old-time sound, they got it.
