Gr 3-5--These titles explain in clear, simple terms the part that science plays in these endeavors. Both books are successful in presenting both basic and slightly more sophisticated concepts in an interesting and palatable manner. Double-page chapters are heavily laden with full-color photographs and illustrations. Bold, large-print type introduces each new topic and encourages browsing. Crime Detection looks at forensic science, security, fingerprints, and how evidence is chemically analyzed and collected. Donna Jackson's The Bone Detectives (Little, Brown, 1996) is also highly pictorial but is much more sophisticated in its approach to the subject. Movies explores the history of moving pictures, how the film camera works, stunts, the difference between regular-sized and large-format film, animation, and computer enhancement. Libraries needing information on "everyday" science for the younger crowd will do well with these colorful introductory titles.
