About the Author

Kathryn Stout is a Christian educator, consultant, and speaker. An honors graduate of the University of Delaware, Kathryn holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education. During her eight years in public schools she taught, tested, and developed programs for students who did not respond to traditional strategies.

She homeschooled her own two children, Clea and Christopher, for fourteen years using the Design-A-Study materials she created. Both graduated from college with honors. Clea earned a BA degree from her parents' alma mater and a Juris Doctorate from Widener University School of Law. Christopher earned a BA in cinema-television from the University of Southern California, attending on a USC Presidential Scholarship.

Kathryn's multilevel books provide the tools necessary for families to do as she did--create (or tailor) a curriculum to suit their children's specific needs.

I used this book with a class of 13 year old boys. Finding their powers of perception sharpened after only two sessions, their excitement in viewing old movies was incredibly palpable. Interestingly, black and white movies took on a new dimension with Sam Spade and "The Maltese Falcon". Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, who liven up "The Philadelpha Story", made romantic comedies a new interest for the young men. While watching "The Music Man" they boys were introduced to "Trouble with a capital T" and the memorable "76 Trombones" which they still reference to this day. As a teacher, I learned a great deal of insight about these movies and my class has been trained to watch these old classics in a new thought-provoking way.

This is a great book with excellent movie selection and questions. We are using this as a directed family conversation which makes the student workbook unnecessary.

We are using this in our homeschool and it's a terrific product. Very detailed, excellent teacher book and equally good student workbook. Highly recommend!

So far my son is really enjoying this curriculum. The movies are good and the discussion questions make them think and observe details. We had already finished a lit. class first semester and I am using this more for writing for second semester. I like that we discuss the questions and there is not a bunch of busy work. The discussion questions that are written is nice because my son can talk out his thoughts with me and get his basic organization of his papers (he is an auditory learner) and then writes his 5 paragraph essays with no problem.
