THREE PLUS, FOR LESS THAN THE PRICE OF ONE, December 8, 2010
Duane Eddy burst on the rock 'n' roll scene in the late fifties, and his unique playing style made an immediate and lasting impact, not least because his records omitted any vocal (apart from the odd vocal effect). This compilation brings together his first three albums, namely the mono "Have Twangy Guitar Will Travel" (December 1958), together with "Especially for You" (June 1959), and "The Twang's the Thang" (December 1959), both of which are in stereo. All three are already available individually, with bonus tracks (some of which are alternate takes) but each will cost you more than the price of this 2-CD set, which includes nine tracks from individual 45s.
Listening again, I can hear echoes of Fats Domino's New Orleans influence in the saxophone accompaniment, and can appreciate Eddy's effect on Johnny Cash's guitar playing. Bob Fisher's liner note explains how Eddy achieved his "twang" sound, although I have to confess I'm not much the wiser. But you don't need to know how it was done in order to enjoy the phenomenal sound.
