Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

With ten years of experience in full-time RV-ing, the authors clearly and matter-of-factly provide copious information on everything a potential RV-er would want to know. This book is filled with pictures, facts, financial information, interesting (sometimes funny) anecdotes, and frank discussion of some of the mistakes made by the Hofmeisters. The presentation is easily accessible to all and should especially appeal to people contemplating this lifestyle. The information appears to be accurate, the caveats are helpful and well meaning, phone numbers are available for some of the attractions mentioned, and an appendix lists phone numbers and addresses for RV service providers. The book covers most states, although Mississippi, parts of the upper Midwest, New England, and North and South Carolina seem to have been left out. Public libraries serving active retirees and soon-to-be retirees (older baby boomers) might want to invest in this inexpensive title.AScott R. Johnson, Whittemore Park Middle Sch., Conway, SC

From the Back Cover

New from the authors of An Alternative Lifestyle...the most up-to-date information on the lifestyle that more than one million are now enjoying which is Full-time RVing.

On March 30th, 1989, exactly two weeks after Ron Hofmeister retired as Deputy Director of Finance for the Michigan Department of Transportation, he and his wife Barbara turned in the keys of their town house and started the ignition of their new home, a twenty-four-foot motorhome. The couple's car was hooked up behind, with their bikes perched on top. After three and one-half years, they traded in the small motorhome for a thirty-four-foot Bounder motorhome. Barb called it her mansion. What started out to be a one or two year adventure has turned into a permanent lifestyle. In 1997, they traded again; this time they purchased a thirty- nine-foot, luxurious American Dream motorhome, which Barb calls her castle.

Shortly after their adventure began, Ron and Barb sat down to write a book about the full-timing lifestyle and how to prepare for it so others would not be afraid to venture out. Their book, An Alternative Lifestyle, sold thousands of copies and was featured on Good Morning America. Radio, TV, and newspapers across the Untied States did big stories about their adventure. And the book kept selling and selling. One reviewer said it was a "how to book that read like an adventure story."

Now Ron and Barb are back with a brand new book. With ten years wort of experience in this adventure-filled lifestyle, they not only detail how to do it, but where to go, what it costs, what to do if illness strikes, and much more. They follow each chapter with their own personal stories.

This second book by Ron and Barb Hofmeister describes everything one needs to know to make an intelligent decision about the possibility of living full-time in a recreational vehicle. Ron and Barb draw on their 9+ years of full-time RVing to share things they have learned through experience.

One of the great things about the book is that they do not try to provide in-depth information in areas that are obviously a matter of opinoin. They do not tell you what kind of vehicle you should own and how you should pack it.

They do tell you the joys and hardships of a full-time lifestyle. They share their own costs to show what one can expect to pay to enjoy this lifestyle. And they offer glimpses of what the lifestyle has to offer.

This is a "must read" for anyone considering a full-time lifestyle in a recreational vehicle.

I bought this book in prep for taking our family of 5 on the road full-time (a subject which this book doesn't cover at all--it is geared almost exclusively to retirees). I found many of the chapters vague and without solid content. In addition, it was not well edited (referred to the computer in their RV as a "PCU") and appears to be a self-published book done on the cheap. But the most aggravating part was the amount of space devoted to their newsletter (which they often printed verbatim at the end of each chapter). Not only were most of these stories irrelevant, they were not interesting for someone doing investigative research (as I was) into full-time RVing. Maybe OK for a retiree with lots of time to read the trying-to-be-pithy stories, but not for someone looking for a concise resource.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beached Boater January 8, 2004
Format:Paperback
Due to an ugly encounter with 2 18-wheelers and 1 car (ours), my husband and I were left with debilitating injuries. After trying the live-aboard lifestyle for 2 years, we found that our disabilities proved too much for the boating lifestyle.
Enter RVing. While we are not "full timers" (I don't want to get disappointed again), the book Movin' On by the Hofmeisters proved insightful and exciting, as travel was our main objective. This book provides not only basics of RVing, but gives fantastic accounts of trips which we would have never dreamed of encountering. I recommend it highly for anyone who may be looking for an easier way to travel, and a first hand account of the out-of-the-way destinations which are sure to excite and make trip planning easier.
