Book Description

October 15, 2002
In this book Tom Cunningham and his colleague, Stephen Pfleiderer, have attempted to outline the various characteristics of a retirement community and to assist the reader in determining what is the best "fit". It is their aim to be objective and avoid unenthusiastic pronouncements, except where it is appropriate to identify possible downsides that could affect the individual's well being. The reader should know from the beginning, however, that no single retirement community exists that fits the needs, desires, wishes, and expectations of all of us. The choices are there for the reader alone to make. The goal is to help individuals make the best decision for their own personal needs and desires.

About the Author

W. Thomas Cunningham, Jr. combines over 35 years of experience of executive leadership in banking and continuing care retirement communities. Following a tenure as Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, he became president of First Virginia Bank-Colonial in Richmond, Virginia, and later served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of United American Bank in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1987, he was chosen as President and Chief Executive Officer of Westminster-Canterbury Richmond, retiring from that position in 2000. During these thirteen years, he re-organized the management staff, instituted the CCRC’s strategic planning process for both management and board, refined the budgeting process, and completed four major construction projects. He also initiated an extensive staff training program, the award-winning The Westminster-Canterbury Way. Westminster-Canterbury Richmond was chosen as "One of America’s Twenty Best CCRCs" by a national publication, and achieved a "A" Bond rating from Standard and Poor’s, the only rating at this level in the state of Virginia among CCRCs.
