Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I am the eighth generation of my family to live in our area and have always been a local history buff. For six years, I was a journalist covering cops, courts, government and business in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Then, I worked in Mecklenburg County government before moving into advertising and PR.  I spent 10 years on the North Carolina tourism PR account, learning everything I could about my home state and city. Combine all those experiences and I feel that I was made to write this book. I hope you like Moving To Charlotte: The Un-Tourist Guide. I'd love to hear from you on how we can improve the next edition.

More About the Author

Harry's ancestors - the Hoovers - crossed the Atlantic from Germany in 1750, then took the Great Wagon Road from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. They settled in the Charlotte, NC area in 1751. His other forebears, the Todds, the Ingles, and the Gaffneys followed closely thereafter.

Except for a military stint spent in Texas and college in Chapel Hill, Harry Hoover has always lived in Mecklenburg County. Harry graduated from West Mecklenburg High School, attended Central Piedmont Community College, and completed his BA at UNC-Chapel Hill.

He spent six years as a radio and newspaper journalist, covering cops and courts, hosting a daily call-in talk show, serving as managing editor and performing color commentator duties for UNCC basketball.

He was assistant director of Mecklenburg County Public Service and Information, then worked at a PR firm and an advertising agency, prior to starting his own agency in 2001. He and his business partner, Brant Waldeck, own My Creative Team, a marketing agency they formed in 2007 that makes Fortune 1000 companies look good.

Harry and his wife, Terry, a mystery author, live near Lake Norman where they are often visited by their son, daughter and grandsons.

Any book that recommends Bar B Que King on Wilkinson Boulevard must be AMAZING!
This slice of Charlotte, NC will help you get your foot in the door of any social setting. It offers a crash course of what this city is all about. The information is eye-opening to newcomers as well as native Charlotteans. It gives new insight to things/places we "locals" have passed by time and time again.
Fellas: This book is full of "Date Night" ideas that are non-generic. Mr. Hoover has done most of the leg work for you!

A "geo-cache" of The Queen City's truest treasures!

Moving To Charlotte is perfect for anyone thinking of relocating to the area. Informative and entertaining but concise, it provides exactly the kind of things prospective Charlotteans want to know, without any fluff, but with an insight into the "flavor" of Charlotte only a native could offer.

My husband and I have moved a number of times in the past 15 years and it would be extremely helpful to have a book like this created for each city we have lived in. I have read this book cover to cover and it is a must have. Buy it, your life will be easier.

I recently gave this book to a family member who is moving to Charlotte. It was the perfect gift. Mr. Hoover fits all of the information you need when planning a move, and with some great pics too! You start with a bit of Charlotte history and then you get right into the meat n taters of what you need to know. Well thought out and planned, I found the chapters on school systems and area demographics especially insightful. My family said they got a real taste of Charlotte in the Chow Down section that focuses on restaurants and in the same chapter you get many of the area attractions. If you're considering a move to change your job or just your scenery pick up Mr. Hoover's book, you will get a clear and concise look at what Charlotte has to offer you from someone who lives there.

I'm currently planning my move to Charlotte from Los Angeles and the section on neighborhoods has been really helpful. It looks like it was meant to be read online rather than in print since some text is underlined and blue but you can't tell what is was supposed to link to. Despite that small issue, it's still a great book to use in addition to other resources for anyone unfamiliar with the city or anyone planning a move from a distance.

This book is a gem - a must-read guide - for folks considering a move to Charlotte. It's also a very entertaining and informative read for those of us already living in the Queen City. I learned some new things about my adopted city, and loved reading the short commentaries by a few of the city's movers and shakers. If you read this book, you'll learn the facts and understand the nuances of what makes Charlotte tick.

Harry Hoover does a great job of giving the reader a feel for Charlotte. I wish I'd had this book when we first moved here. It would have answered so many questions and saved us a lot of time! This will be my "go-to gift" for anyone who even mentions moving to Charlotte! But for now, he shares so many places to go and things to do that I'll have to catch up on anything we've missed!
