4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, enjoyable blues with warmth and respect for tradition, August 28, 1999

Paul Rishell and Annie Raines manage to continue the country and delta blues traditions without being taxidermists --- the life is still in the carefully and well-chosen covers. They can play the hell out of the electrified styles also, but give me those Bo Carter tunes anyday. Annie especially shines in the Chicago-style numbers, while Paul's playing on that National guitar is first rate. Paul and Annie make a good duet, with great chemistry and a refreshing restraint and smart tastefulness in their playing. Their band rocks, too. I recommend the album.

3.0 out of 5 stars a little off, December 24, 1999

I have the prior discs of Paul and Annie and love them and purchased this one with great anticipation. I can't put my finger on it, but this one dissappointed me slightly. In part its the style of the songs, a tad too old-timey and less pure blues. In part it is a forced feel to the whole thing.

Its not horrible, but it just isnt great either.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rishell + National Steel guitar= awesome, November 22, 1999

I was lucky enough to see this duo at a blues festival this side of the Atlantic and bought the album along with one of Paul's solo albums on the strength of their set. I've not been disappointed. Both electrified and acoustic numbers are equally good. Personally I prefer the electric versions since Annie's harmonica sounds better and is more prominent but Paul on the Steel guitar is something to hear. Buy it, but better still, see them live.
