Many or those who switch to Adobe InDesign from QuarkXpress or PageMaker these days. Those who do might not need a book about everything that InDesign is and is able to do. What they need is a book about the differences in techniques between the applications. Then this book is a good choice. It compares how things were done in QuarkXpress or PageMaker to how it is done in InDesign. If you also want to dig a bit deeper into InDesign you buy both this book and Real World InDesign CS. If you only want to get started and get over the obstacles with changing to new application that in principle does what you have done for years in that other application, but in another way than what you are used to, you chose this book.


I warmly recommend this book, and I use it in courses for switchers to InDesign.

I have read author David Blatner's book on quark and being very familar with that program, I found his book on moving to indesign immensely helpful. You get great tips on how to do things that you have already established in your quark workflow. The index is well organized and a quick reference.

As always with a Blatner book, this guide delivers exactly what it says it will. I was up and running in InDesign in no time and continue to reference its succinct text as I work. I recommend this to anyone who knows Xpress and wants to get InDesign going in a hurry.

Very helpful for QuarkXPress users learning InDesign! For readers who need data conversion from QuarkXPress to InDesign, I recommend Q2ID. These authors have expertise in the desktop publishing field and give especially excellent tips for QuarkXPress users.

David Blatner is not to be ignored. An all-around boy genius, he ranks at the top of software tutors. His books are known for great information, a good mix of examples, diagrams, tips, tricks, and resources, with just the right amount of levity (if you're like me, you've found too much lame humor in software books).

So, when Blatner, an early adopter, advocate, and trainer of QuarkXPress, admitted that he was puttering with InDesign, there were rumblings in the world of page layout software. It didn't take him long to become a hardcore partisan for Adobe's "Quark Killer," and he has gone on to be a renown writer, podcaster, and speaker on the subject of InDesign.

That means that he's the ideal scout to lead you across the dark divide when you attempt to do the things in InDesign that you used to do in QuarkXPress. We all know that you have found any number of NEW things that InDesign can do -- and you're delighted. But what about those times when you're moving ahead on an InDesign project and come up against the wall? You know exactly how to do this in XPress! How the heck do you do it in InDesign? Answer: look in this book.

NOTE: Though the value of this book cannot be denied, I have found the perfect complement: "QuarkXPress to InDesign: Face to Face," by Galen Gruman. Its side-by-side task-oriented layout often proves adequate when seeking instant help, and is usually the quickest way to check on something. But by itself, it's a bit shy on depth. You can really benefit from the pair. Look around and find them both used. They're outdated in some regards, so don't spend too much $$$ on 'em.

This book is a great transition book from QuarkXPress to InDesign! They are two completely different systems to switch from butd the book makes it easy to do. I recommend this to everyone. And even better, buy a used book, you'll see someone else's highlights which helps find the important stuff.

Hard to find what I wanted. Preferred the Sams All in One for Creative Suite 2. Much easier to navigate. This book was a waste of money.
