Book Description

February 20, 2009
After living abroad in France, Dubai, Oman, Norway and the Netherlands, author and journalist, Jo Parfitt, has compiled here, an anthology of the poetry that has 'saved her life' during the 20 years she has been on the road. This is a memoir in poetry of a life overseas. Join the author on her journey through culture shock, repatriation, motherhood, the world of work and self-discovery as she shares the moments when she was on top of the world, in the valley of shadows, and many places in between. This is a book in which expatriates everywhere can find themselves.

More About the Author

My first book was accepted by the first publisher I approached, back in 1984. The book was 'French Tarts' and the publisher was Octopus. I went on to have 13 word processing and desktop publishing handbooks published by Macmillan, McGraw-Hill, Pitman and Paradigm, over the next few years. By then I had become an 'expat wife' and was living in Dubai. In 1993 we were posted to Oman, Word had become the only WP program and so my other work dried up. Inspired by the landscape and produce of Oman I decided to co-author another cookbook and create Summertime Publishing in order to do it myself. 'Dates' sold thousands of copies but in 1996 we were posted to Norway. Here, I realised my decade abroad had taught me much about expat life and portable careers. Summertime published 'Forced to Fly' and 'Career in Your Suitcase'. I had become an expat expert and my career as a journalist specialising in expat issues and speaker at international conferences took off.

In 1997 we returned to England for a while and I published 'Find Your Passion' and 'Grow Your Own Networks'. In 2005 we moved to the Netherlands and I returned to traditional publishing and new editions of 'Find Your Passion' and 'Career in Your Suitcase' were published by Lean Marketing Press and 'Dates' by Zodiac. In addition LMP published my books 'Release the Book Within' and 'Expat Entrepreneur'.

Today, I'm still in Holland and Summertime Publishing is back on full throttle, not only as a publisher but also as a complete mentoring and publishing service. In March I published my poetry memoir, 'A Moving Landscape' and have now begun publishing other people's books too.

5.0 out of 5 stars something for everyone- a very enjoyable read!, July 10, 2009
By
Caroline A Liebenow (Nashua, New Hampshire, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Moving Landscape (Paperback)
Jo Parfitt illustrates her wealth of life experiences in this collection of poems, written while living in her home country and abroad, over a span of more than 25 years. She shows tremendous versatility in writing about a variety of topics, including: homesickness, personal milestones such as marriage, birth, achieving a goal, nature, and impressions of her host countries. I found it particularly interesting to learn more about Jo through her poetry. Her use of metaphors is very effective and she gives us just enough information to make us curious, but doesn't spoon-feed us. One of my favorites is The Graduate of 1983, in which Jo talks about ambition, success, soul-searching, and character stereotypes.

The poems are arranged chronologically and record Jo's thoughts, observations, and emotions at each stage of her life and before and after each international move. Although I have only lived abroad once, I could very easily relate to her perspectives, as all changes in life- even the welcome ones- bring both positive and negative feelings. A Moving Landscape has inspired me to consider writing a series of poems about my own experience of repatriating after 5 years abroad.

Whether you are a longtime reader of poetry or new to the genre, you will find this book to be a beautiful addition to your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Global Life in Poetry, May 18, 2009
This review is from: A Moving Landscape (Paperback)
What a wonderful gift to share with the world. Jo Parfitt tells her story through poetry in A Moving Landscape that moves me to tears, and laughter, each time I dip into it. She generously shares her feelings, happy, sad, and sometimes resentful - all emotions that those on the expatriate treadmill have felt but been unable to voice. Some poems are amusing, "I'd always poo-pooed the idea that once wooed I'd jack in my job for a bloke," is the start of her wedding speech which heralded her roving life. Some are angry, "Take me. Pluck me from my home and friends" and speak of her frustration at being transferred again. And some are unbearably poignant as Jo writes of her mother, "I'll find you in the mirror when I trace the lines upon my face."
Her poetry follows a global journey with words intense with longing and sadness, or colourful and evocative of exotic scents and scenes. But words also of joy at the simple things that often give the most pleasure - a child's smile or learning to belly dance. Let the beauty of her words and landscapes help you on your travels.
