5.0 out of 5 stars A Book For Relocators That Non-Relocators Can Also Enjoy
MOVING TO MAINE is a great book for relocators that non-relocators can also enjoy. It describes the school systems, weather, housing, and other necessities that people moving there need to know, but it also describes, shopping, cultural, and dining experiences that a vacationer can take advantage of. Whether you're actually relocating to Maine, going on vacation there, or...

2.0 out of 5 stars Bunch of Facts
Interesting collection of general Maine statistics and facts. I guess it's interesting to know how many people live in each city of each county or the names and locations of each of the various farmers markets that sprout up around Maine but if you are planning on moving to Maine I think you'll need some other information. For example, this book does not mention any of...

This review is from: Moving to Maine: The Essential Guide to Get You There and What You Need to Know to Stay (Paperback)
I found this book to be extremely helpful and it had answers to many questions I had about Maine. The information was very through and covered all bases. The author addressed taxes, renting, housing, shopping, schools, and other important information. I really enjoyed this book.

I bought this book for my sister-in-law before she moved to Maine. We all skimmed through it and aquired lots of new information. I am sure that she will glean very valuable information as she starts her life in the great state of Maine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving to Maine- Great Resource for New Residents, November 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I found this book to be extremely helpful in our recent relocation to Maine. Having never lived this far north before, the book really prepared us for what to expect, as well as all of the necessary information for living in the state of Maine. Because of this book, I was not "shell shocked" by the State Income Tax when I arrived, as I was when I moved to New Jersey many years ago. Additionally, this is a great "guide book" for the various places to visit in Maine. I highly recomment Moving to Maine to any new or prospective residents of Maine. It is a wonderful state to live in and the book really hit the mark in capturing the ambience of the area and the warmth of the people here. It will take a lot to get us to leave this wonderful state.

My wife and I are considering moving to Maine when we retire. We've visited several times and love the environment, the people, and the ocean. Of course, we haven't spent so much time there that we really know all about Maine. This book was very enlightening. A smallpopulation (relatively speaking) keeps the Taxes high (the highest in the nation). But we live in New York State which is the next highest tax burdened state, so that's a no brainer.
The real reason we are thinking about Maine is the need to be away from the "maddening crowd". The population of Maine is just over 1,300,000. Compare that to the population of NYC at an astounding 8,363,710 and Maine is incredibly private.

So it's not for sure and this book is very honest about the good and the challenging regarding living in Maine. But,not unexpectedly, the author has a predilection for Maine.

Recommended if considering, but I suggest that more visits and talking to the "natives" would be more helpful in making a decision.

Interesting collection of general Maine statistics and facts. I guess it's interesting to know how many people live in each city of each county or the names and locations of each of the various farmers markets that sprout up around Maine but if you are planning on moving to Maine I think you'll need some other information. For example, this book does not mention any of the Real Estate firms or links to finding a house. There was a brief mention of building houses and pre-fab but no links or lists of reputable home builders or pre-fab builders. Nor does it shed light on the actual move to Maine e.g. storage facilities, moving companies, etc. I think the book should also have included more 'job' information such as the likelihood of getting a job with the State of Maine, pay rates for government work, and companies that have a history of hiring (it does provide a list of the companies that employ the most people but that doesn't tell me if they are hiring). I honestly think that most of the facts presented in this book can be readily found on the internet based on what you are looking for with a few basic searches.

This book is basically a commercial for Maine. It didn't discuss potential problems you might encounter living in Maine, and instead it just talked about how great everything there is.
